Speech concepts

My ds is 4.5 (ASD) has speech & language delay and disorder started mainstream reception in September. He has had a great first term, ahead with reading and maths and socially thriving in his own way. His speech is slowly improving but he has real problems consistently understanding who/where/what/when questions. Just wondered if anyone had any tips of how to help? At the moment his books are v simple stories and he seems to have pretty good comprehension but as they get more sophisticated I can see his reading ability being way ahead of ability to understand/communicate. He speaks in 1-3 words generally and learnt phrases it is improving but v slowly. Thanks

Have you tried colourful semantics for question words?

Thanks for replying, question builder looks really good and he loves the iPad. There was a lot of discussion between school/OT/SALT around "colourful semantics" v "shape coding" SALT prefer shape coding and they plan to start this term. He responds very well visually/words hence he is doing really well with reading so fingers crossed it will help extend his sentences.

Signs? Either marathon or BSL.
