Can sensory issues exist without ASD?

Our Consultant Paed insisted that Sensory Processing Disorder or Sensory Integration Dysfunction are not really terms used medically over her and are very much American?!! She also seems to be placing emphasis on Sensory issues very much being a part of ASD.
Our OCcupational Therapist a while ago led us to believe may not be ASD, and could be anxiety and sensory on their own?! Not in denial, realise ASD is a possibility, just confused now!!
I'm sure I've heard of individuals diagnosed with conditions along side sensory, but not ASD! I think perhaps she's just wanting me to be open to the fact it could be ASD perhaps....I don't know!

Yep it can! Though the diagnosis 'Sensory Processing Disorder' is not yet a widely recognised diagnosis under the NHS (I may be wrong though and it may be dependent on the borough).

Personally I would think if a consultant can see Asd I would request an assessment and see what happens.

Thanks. I can see ASD traits, however, we prev has Selective Mutism and sensory/anxiety confirmed. SM has similar traits to ASD. You can have one without the other, but they can co-exist. We are having an assessment.

I think that is wise! My Dd3 has all 3 although she doesnt have a formal dx of selective mutism.

DS2 has sensory processing disorder. He doesn't have ASD. When his sensory world is on an even keel, he manages as well as his NT siblings.
