Can anyone tell me whether children with SEN in main stream schools can choose any school when applying for secondary school or whether they have to have a specific reason for going to particular school? Thank you

Hi Moody

I think you may have been answered elsewhere by an admissions expert but if not then the rule of thumb is

If the child has an EHCP (statement) naming their school they should be able to name their school of choice to move to for secondary education

Thanks for this. Is a statement different to being assessed as having SEN ? So, for example if someone has diagnosis of autism and is on SEN list at school does this mean they have a statement or is that different? Sorry if I sound ignorant, thanks in advance

Hi op I'm sorry just having a diagnosis isn't a statement (which is now called an EHCP)

An EHCP is an Educational health and care plan put in place to provide extra support for a child with significant additional needs following a formal assessment process

Okay, clear now. Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge!
