DS2's echolalia has taken a new turn recently - he's started echoing all my phrases. It's so weird hearing all the things I say (obviously ALL the time) repeated back at me. So we get

Me: DS2, it's time to go to school
DS2: Come on!
I try to brush his hair - he protests
DS2: I know, I know. Sorry.
I put him into the car
DS2: Right! Come on!

It's like watching a video of yourself and being embarrassed at the number of times you say the same thing .

PS feel a bit odd starting a light hearted thread when things have been so heavy recently - haven't been ignoring the other stuff, honest.

It always makes me laugh when ds2 comes out with new words and phrases and you know exactly where he's heard them from because he copies the person's voice and accent too.

Ah that is so funny

it's great when they do this, i brought some talking bathroom scales and my DS would walk around quoting how heavy i was, soon got rid of scales!

we get some great ones from school - "No Peter we do not do that!" said in a very prim and proper voice or "hello rainbows" said in a bright upbeat let's jolly them all along sort of voice .

I have posted this before but Ds2 used to really make me laugh by adapting sentences from books to fit the situation - such as "Ds2 said nothing but he was not happy" (from "Mog said nothing but she was not happy" in the Judith Kerr books) or "Never mind Ds2 it wasn't your fault, we always said your Mummy was no good" - which I daresay many of you will recognise from "Never mind James, it wasn't your fault, we always said those wooden brakes were no good."

LOL Onlyjoking and Saker. Definitely not getting those scales! We're not getting as much TV echolalia atm funnily enough - hopefully that means I am more interesting than Postman Pat et al...

Drives me mad!!!! But you do get rather embarrassd when you realise where they come from!

Can I ask - if the echoing happens only when I tell ds3 off, does it counts as true echolalia iyswim? We rarely get it at other times you see.

LOL at this thread. My Ds has a huge repertoire of spiderman/x-men dialogue & some choice bits from books like "put me down, I don't wish to fall" from Cat in the Hat which always gets him v.strange looks in the park!! He also used to be big on quoting Postman Pat sphil, complete with Ted Glenn accent

DS used to love the book whatever next where the bear goes up the chimney to the moon, he went throu a phase of saying look at the state of you in response to anyone saying hello to him.
he used to quote the film classification thing too certificate 12 may contain breif nudity and mild sexy scenes

This is very funny. My dd3 who has Downs and ASD has no speech, but babbles happily to herself. However, there's been are couple of episodes of echolalia, which totally freak every one out. She's been heard to repeat, in the appropriate tone of voice:
"That's stupid!"
and when at playschool:
"Careful boys!"
Its very disconcerting when a child who can't speak suddenly says something! But it gives me hope that she might actually speak one .........

DS1 used to echo complete strangers that he overheard in playgrounds and supermarkets and so on. I was always terrified that he was going to get us beaten up if someone thought he was taking the piss....
