Think we failed the Autism test.

Our dd has been waiting 2 years to be assessed for autism. We had our parental interview on Friday and we answered no to some of the questions. She does not flap, makes eye contact with family and does not collect things. I've to bring her in on Tuesday but i feel that there was a lot of things that we did not get to tell him because he only asked about certain things. I think we made her fail because of our answers.

I felt similar to this as my son was being assessed and the parental interview though is very important is only one part of the picture. A questionnaire was sent to school, he was seen by an ed psychologist, had an OT assessment as well as speech therapy and this was all under the care of the community doctor. They all have their input so don't feel like u failed anything!

All you can do is tell it how it is and hope that the proffs see what you see.

If there are things you didnt get chance to say dont leave it, you could ask for another appointment when you take your Dd again or you could write it down and hand it over to the proff. Or you could ask for an email address.

I think you will be worrying about this if you dont do something especially if your Dd doesnt get a diagnosis after her part of the assessments.

Thanks, I'm going to write a list for him. We only have this appointment and then he sends the report to the hse* Irish version of nhs. Said it will take about 2 weeks. The waiting will do my head in. It's just an autism assessment. The ed pays said she felt she might have ADD but they are not looking at this

My son (5) has mild autism. He does not flap or collect things and he makes some eye contact. A lot of things go against him having Autism. But he was diagnosed a few months ago! So try not to panic.

Everything goes into consideration. Your interview, reports from professionals such as speech therapists, occupational therapists and educational psychologists as well as the schools input.

I'm not sure if the diagnosis process is the same everywhere in the country. We are in Cornwall. But my son had symptoms in every area they look at for a diagnosis despite that he doesn't even seem autistic in many ways.

We have just received an autism diagnosis for our 7 year old dd. She does not fit many of the classic areas that I have read about. The specialist spent 2 hours with her while we were interviewed. I also took notes in, which they asked for. They were really just scribbles. The speech therapist did some kind of diagnostic - play based. What they found is that our conversation/concerns and notes were in line with her findings.

We are still trying to come to terms with the diagnosis. We really thought they would say that there were no concerns,, but a diagnosis we got.

It is not too late to give your concerns and you may have said more than you realised.

Autism is a very big spectrum. DS hasn't got a diagnosis of Autism but has a diagnosis of social communication disorder which is similar. I know a little girl who has Autism, can speak really well, no sensory or repetitive behaviours as far as I can see. May seem quirky to others. Autism is not really a check box of symptoms. Eg, can he/she make eye contact? Does he/she flap. It's more to do with a collective of behaviours which gets the diagnosis. To be honest... Lack of eye contact and some sensory issues is seen in many types of special needs not related to Autism.

Thank you for your replies. She gets no resources because everyone is waiting for an official diagnosis. If is not this they think it's ADD or DCD. Drives me wrong that we have been waiting years and no straight answer. Hope all your children are doing well❤️
