Dyspraxia information

Hello,

My son is 5 and has recently been assessed for delayed motor skills by an OT. She said his difficulties are consistent with a diagnosis of dyspraxia and he is being referred to the paediatrician.

I am new to all of this, currently feeling confused and guilty that I missed this.

Could anyone recommend a book which explains dyspraxia to the layman mum and any advice on what I can expect school to do to support him?

Hi there the Dyspraxia Foundation is an excellent website and they also have a fantastic helpline staffed by volunteers who gave me some great advice when my son was diagnosed. The best, most accessible book I read is 'Dyspraxia the Foundations' written by Gill Dixon who has experience of the condition both personal (her sons both have it) and professional. It's an ebook available on kindle and also I think via the Foundation. Depending on his specific difficulties and needs there are some things school can do around extra support for handwriting, and physical development - but lots of info in the book. I missed my son's issues too, school picked it up, but the main thing is your little one will be able to get support once diagnosed and he is still really young so plenty of time to work on specific areas that he needs help with. Hi, sorry for delay responding. It was school who were concerned, I didn't think there was much of a problem but he shows both fine and gross motor difficulties there compared to other children, eg. Pencil grip, poor balance in PE, clumsy and poor attention.
