Help - I need your Movicol wisdom please

We started last Friday. We had a result the next morning and then nothing until Friday at school. Her teacher reported a co mpletley fill, not room to spare nappy, extreme. Now today she has been 4 times.

What do we do?

Do we carry on giving her 1 sachet a day?
Do we stop for a few days?
Do we give her half a sachet?

(She's on the pediatric stuff not the adult gear)

Your advice hugely welcomed.

this is normal teecee, it just means that it is clearing the "backlog" for want of a better word.

If you stop the movicol (like we did at first after something similar) then it all builds up again.

We started her off on 1 a day and now she,s on 2 a day and she goes every couple of days but if we miss only one it makes a huge difference, but dont forget you CAN go up to 8 if it gets really bad, you just need to experiment with it a bit and see what level makes her regular.

sorry, just reread your message, if you stop giving her 1 a day or cut her down to half a day you may find that she goes back to being constipated.

We carried on giving 1 a day.

Needed to hear that and thought so but after 4 nappies in one day, a first in 5 years, we don't get that in 1 week usually, we just needed reasurance.

exact same thing happened to us a few months ago and we were so shocked cos usually we had to take her to A&E when she was really bad.

Its great movicol, dd asks for it and calls it her "sugar"

It's amazing stuff.

What is wrong with bloody GPS they faff around and talk to us about lactulose for years. My DD has been going once a week for 5 years, nothing's ever worked. It took you guys and your suggestions, of movicol to sort this out!

aw, thats awful 5 years

we were advised by a health professional "off the record" of the name of the paediatrician that DD now goes to, she told us that he was the best.

On one of the times she was hospitalised i told the attending doctor that she was going to see DR XXXXX and he said no, no you cant get an appointment with him you must be mistaken, but nope. get an appointment we did and he,s absolutely brill, we have his direct number and he always phones us back and, im gushing too much !!!!!!!!

But i know what you mean about GP,s when we asked for movicol he wouldnt give it us until i told him Dr XXXXX says she,s to have it and its now on repeat.

My GP had never heard of it being used for kids. He's uses it for the elderly only, until now.

Just to second jenk TC. It's probably just shifting a lot of backlog and it can take a while to get into a regular routine. I certainly wouldn't stop it completely, see how it goes tomorrow and you could always give the 1 sachet in two halves. Does she get any pain?

Not so good for DP though. LOL! My arm is in a sling (don't know why, just f'ing killing me) so he's been on nappy duty and DD2 likes to expolde at least twice a day as well!

Ooo lovely - hope he keeps his fingernails short. Gets everywhere doesn't it? lol!

Hope the arm is feeling better soon too (although now may be a good time to milk it a bit )

my DD only used to go once a week...only on a friday! she had some medicine which made her have to go more often, she is much better now but still doesn't like to use toilets when out and about, her record was 7 in the morning leaving lanzarote got home at 7 at night where she went to the toilet and did a massive wee.

Glad it's working Teecee - I'm sure that once you find the right daily does it'll settle. My dd is on 1/2 a scahet a day = one poo a day!

Hope the arm's better soon, although it sounds like it's in your interests to keep it in the sling as long as possible

Can I just asked something, sorry for gatecrashing, but on Movicol, will the poos always be really soft? My son is on it just for normal constipation and holding it back, and it does work and he doesn't do the lil pops with soem more as much anymore(but still refuses the potty or toilet, sigh), but it's very very soft, not liek formed in anyway....is that normal or just still him getting used to it?

DD1's usually come out like cannonballs.
On movicol, they have been very loose.

With dd it's very soft, but not loose (if that makes sense). It did take us a while to find the right dosage, she had a few poo explosions when she was on 1 sachet a day poor love.

Might see how ds goes on a slighter dosage, they really should see this stuff on an easier to measure way, like in premixed and by the ml's
or in powderform in a jar but with a measuring scoop, sigh

I think it takes a while for them to get used to it & to get into a regular routine, particularly if there's a history of withholding. DD went from the positively volcanic, to very soft to softish. I was advised to make any adjustments to the dose very gradually, in small step changes. Such a difference since she switched to Movicol from lactulose though - it's been so much better.

My 3 year old was on lactulose and senokot for 2 years, we have now got her on movicol, but she is still holding onto them, and its driving me mad, she has a real fear of going, even it they are soft when she does go she still only goes when I hold her on the toilet

Movicol is brilliant.My son is 18 and sld.
You wouldnt believe how bad he can get with constipation.He nearly died once. Tried everything,movicol is best.However I do try and use natural methods before he had the movicol.Loads of fruit etc.I dont think it works,just make me feel better.
Weve had years of despair,the movicol was discovered about 2 years ago-its ACE.
