Pervasive Development Disorder - anyone know about it?

Ds was seen just before christmas by a Dr Blincow at the Priory in Hove.

I have just had his report and he indicates a leanign towards pervasive Development Disorder.

I have had a quick google and from what i have found so far, it does describe DS to a T. but it seems an umbrella term that includes Autism for a change rather than it being a subgroup of the ASD.

I am confused now so have stopped reading. Does anyone have any knowledge of PDD that they could pass on to me in sentances containing words of one syllable only please.

Why is it that every time i think we are getting closer to a firm dx i end up more confused than when we started?

lol mamazon, i read up on it some time ago as i did an online test i think, and it came back as poss pdd, and have to say it sounded just like autism to me aswell, so perhaps its just another name for it, you know what these specialists are like for trying to confuse us with words we dont know lol, hope you get some decent explanations though soon, am sure someone on here will be able to help you.

My DS was just diagnosed with PDD also - and let me clarify the term.

There are many disorders on what they call the Autism Spectrum - There is of course Autism itself; Aspergers Syndrome and then Pervasive Development Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. (PDD-NOS)

While these are all Autism Spectrum Disorders, it does not mean that someone with PDD has Autism - rather, it means some of the characteristics of a child with PDD are similar or are linked to those with Autism. The range is wide and the umbrella is too - so be cautious in looking for information. But know they are almost always linked, as they are all on the spectrum.

Hope to talk soon! That's why I joined this group to find support as my one son with PDD is a twin - and his twin does not have it. Lots going on. My boys are almost 5 yrs old.

hiya mamazon, my DS has had a dx from the NHS of PDD.

Our psych says that its the official medical term for Autism, its what the americans usually use, in this country and in europe they tend to use "Autistic Spectrum Disorder" he told us that at a recent meeting he was at with experts in Autism that he was corrected when he referred to ASD, the Professionals told him that the correct medical term is PDD.

HTH or maybe not, i might have just confused you even further, i know i was confused when i found out about DS but i was talking to the ASD school that we want him to attend the other day and i mentioned PDD and the headteacher said yes well thats autism anyway.

mmm, thought so, so they do just try and confuse us, well in my case that doesnt take much anyway lol, welcome teresa, i am a newby myself, only been around the boards a few wks or so, but i do like to bob on, between these lot and the online group i am in i dont need the proffessionals lol. hope you enjoy it, and feel like you have found some support, heaven knows there isnt any offline for us is there.

My ds is 6 Teresa. We have never had a firm dx of anythign really. we have a list of his "difficulties" which all add up to ASD pretty much. every time we see someone new they giev us something different to think about.
sinc he was 2 we have had Aspergers, ADHD, ADD, Semantic pragmatic disorder, reguler ol' ASD, GDD, and then being told he may not have any specific "problem" just a serious of "symptoms" that will never fit properly under one dx, and now the PDD.

Thankfully h has had a statment since he was 3 so he gets good suport though he is in MS (thats a whole other rant)
