Date for Assessment through - what to expect?

Hi all

Hope everyone is well and surviving the run up to Christmas.

We had a call from the hospital this morning and Daniel has been booked in a cancellation slot for next Tues for a full development assessment. I have no idea what to expect really as I assume this one will be more involved than that of the HV. Can anyone shed any light? What sort of things do I need to ask?

Looking forward now with a mix of dread and anticipation. Daniel has really come on in the last few weeks and there is no doubt that his glasses have helped but I still have lingering concerns.

Thanks
Kirsty

I think the assessment procedure varies from one place to another tbh. Take lots of notes with you about Daniel's development history, even if you've answered the same questions 100 times before. They ask about things like sitting, walking, language, fine motor skills etc. They may even ask about the pregnancy and birth.

If the appointment is with just the Paed then he/she will probably be watching Daniel playing while you are answering questions. Some of the toys will be there for specific purposes, eg inset puzzles to assess fine motor skills, a slide to assess ability to climb steps and co-ordinate body, books to see what level of understanding Daniel has etc. They will also be looking at his interaction skills, eg whether he brings you the toys to show you and share them, whether he makes eye contact etc. They will also be looking to see if his play-skills are appropriate for his age. My 2 boys had separate assessments with the SALT, Child Psych, OT, Physio etc but that was over a period of one week.

Good luck.
