cranial osteopathy and ASD....

hi everyone
Sure it has been done before but can anyone tell me the benefits of cranial osteopathy for asd children?? It was recommended by a good friend and on the strength of that I have booked dd1 in next week for a trial session...(she is 5)

any thoughts???

absolutely wonderful. I took my chap first when he was 4. It takes several sessions for an effect to be seen but after one session he came home and was far more chatty, calmer and a lot less frustrated. I try to go just when you get to that point when you think I am going to kill my little darlings because he is being soooo weird. I find with my chap it goes in phases - a few weeks of being brilliant and then a down hill decline and then AHHHHHH. DS had to go every two weeks at first then it dropped down to once a month and then every few months. We have had several big gaps (like years) when I didn't go. Now he is 11 I base it on instinct - so we went last autumn and then again before the SATS. I would say it is definately worth it but you do have to ride with it a bit. You don't actually see anything happening - so you feel like you are paying £25 for nothing and sometimes afterwards - the next day the child may be different. Usually my chap is just calmer and happier but one dreadful time he went hyperactive and I truly feel for any parent that has an ADHD child after that. I would give it a go.

sounds like it is a positive experience then... my dd is a lively sort and I was asked about her staying still... that may be a problem but am sure she would get used to it.....

It had no discernible effect on my DS. My view is that his ASD is just too severe and too complex. He didn't like it much either and much preferred aromatherapy massage! I also took my DD who is NT and could not detect any effect. I wouldn't put anyone off trying it but don't expect miracles and you may be pleasantly surprised or you can just stop going, no harm done.

Not sure if it helped ds2 or his routine did - he was off Nursery for the summer break and then after 2 weeks back they had a close down for 2.5 weeks. This whole period coincided with some appaling behaviour and looking back I am surprised that we came through it in one piece, lots of violence and aggression and damage to the house and siblings. We are back on track - maybe because Nursery has been ongoing again for a while or maybe because of the Cranial. Either way I don't care, he is far from an angel but he is lovable again. HTH

Just wanted to say that I did find it helps and we only go about 4 times a year.

There isn't a miracle cure for asd but I always see these things as say if it helps dd 5% then it's 5% better than not doing it iykwim.

Loads of people who I know that have children with asd take their children to see same man we go to. One of dd's friends didn't talk until he was 4 and it was the day after he had seen the CO. Not sure if it was a coincidence but I do honestly think it did have something to do with it!

just an update... she went this evening to the osteopath and was as star! dd1 was so well behaved I wondered if I had brought the right child! she will need about 4 sessions and we will then review if there is a difference....

Another update for you all...
Dd1 has now had 4 cranial osteopathy sessions. Unfortunately there has been little change in her for the better...
However..
It appears that since the sessions started there has been more problems come to light. It seems that her problems are more than meets the eye so I have now asked the doctor to refer her back to a paediatrician for an ADHD assessment..

I know it probably feels like another hurdle but when you have the dx at least it will be a step forward in terms of help and support offered to you - hopefully.
