Ds1 climbing and jumping all over the sofas

Ds has ASD, non verbal. he has always run and jumped but has recently started jumping all over the sofas, walking across the back of sofas ,jumping off the (high) arms etc. It doesn't matter how many times I ask him to get down he starts again within seconds. He would spend all day doing this if we let him. I've tried everything, distracting him with toys etc but nothing works. Ds2 age 2 is now copying this behaviour and it is driving me up the wall. Does anyone have any experience with this behaviour? Thanks.

My DT2 did this a lot. I was always terrified he would hurt himself. It used to drive me insane too as I was constantly watching out for him and ignoring his twin. I don't know why, but he largely stopped on his own. It's easier to distract him now with books or toys. He started at about 18 months and really cut down around 2 years. Come to think of it, this was around the time I bought a mini trampoline. He is on that a lot.

He does still launch himself onto the sofa from the sofa arm but never if there is something on the sofa, like a cushion (so there are always cushions there Smile)

DS age 6 still does that -but not as often as he used to.

Did you talk to an OT or a Physio - I think it might be to do with inability to regulate sensory issues - not sure about this.

DS tends to do it when he is excited about something

I don't mind him doing it as he hasn't fallen yet - but think he wil damage the couches

Can you provide a substitute activity? We have a small indoor rebounder for ds1 which has solved a lot of the bouncing on the bed issues. We have even been known to take it away on holiday with us!

Has he got a trampoline?

Thanks for your replies. Yes he has an outdoor and small indoor trampoline which gets a huge amount of use. He is never ever still unless he's I'll. We do spent a lot of time outside and in the park but as soon as we come home he will immediately start jumping all over the sofas.
