Ds and an EHCP....

My DS is 10. He will be 11 in October and is going into year 6.
He has a dx of ASD (Aspergers) and does not have a statement. He is academically able, far outstrips a lot of his class and thus the party line was that he didn't need a statement.

However, I am now noticing that the emotional/maturity gap is widening between him and his peers and his outbursts are getting bigger and more frequent as he struggles with change, noise, people etc.

He will be transferring to secondary school in September 2016 and I am already worried.
The school we have chosen is small with a very caring ethos and a great attitude towards SN. They have a student support centre and I already know DS will be given an exit card and support in 'noisy' lessons like drama and music.

BUT I think he needs extra support.

The SENCO at his primary school says he is unlikely to get an EHCP but she would say that wouldn't she as that is the party line!

I am thinking I need to apply myself as I know it will take ages! I know he will need extra support in things like Science where his unpredictability will be a safety issue. I jsut need to get on with it don't I?

I would, personally but we are just on the back of a fairly spectacular disaster in yr7. If you apply now there is a chance you could have it sorted ready for next september.The spanner in the works is when children are making progress.

Does your Ds make progress with extra support now or regardless!! Authorities will often fight if schools show that students are progressing.

That doesnt mean you cant get an EHCP for emotional needs, you most certainly can. We have just finally managed to get Dd3 a statement, it will be one of the last issued but the law is the same! If children or young people need provision that is over and above that which most other children their age need then they may need to be assessed for an EHCP!

Does you LA do this high needs funding that Polter's son has been accessing? Because that seems to have really worked for him this yr along with a very supportive school!

I think you are right polter, if we were parents choosing schools now and only had ofsted and glossy brochures to look at as many parents do, who would have though that things would have turned out the way they have!!!

I am really glad that inclusion really does work in some places, it gives hope to those coming behind us!
