Just wondering what social stories are? Have trouble with dd in shoeshops, doctors, shops etc and thought they may be useful. Dd has a large vocab. but I am not always sure that she understands certain situations, ie shoeshops and maybe if I sat down with pictures and explained it may help??? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Carol Gray is the Soc Stories guru. You can get her books through Amazon or I think she has a website with lots of useful guidelines. Soc Stories are basically short, clear and individualsed stories that have a "message". They might be, say 5 pages long with one statement on each page, possibly with a photo or Pec-style symbol.
E.G.
Page 1 - My name is X (pic of X)
Page 2 - My mummy takes me shopping (pic of mummy or shops)
Page 3 - Mummy lets me buy sweets (pic of sweets)
Page 4 - We line up and wait to pay (pic of check out or something)
Page 5 - If I wait nicely I can have the sweets (pic of sweets... again?)
This is probably not a brilliant example but I hope it helps you get the idea.

I use these alot- i will find a useful website i found through a link on Carol Grays site and post it here- they also do 'social phrases' to on there- so you can get a stockpile of phrases to use at the right moment. If i can't find the site i will contact you and post you some- i have about 100 pages- and some are very similar- so i wouldn't miss them!!!!

We've just started using social stories with ds1. The SALT wrote the text for ours but we'll probably have to start writing our own stories soon.

Coppertop, maybe we could share the texts or post the topics to see if anyone's interested? God knows there must be better examples than mine!

Davros - I would be very interested to get people's ideas. I have tried a few time, but found the whole thing daunting. I was shown how to do it by the behavioural psychologist and I think her approach has scared me off. She emphasised the importance of using certain types of language, etc.

So maybe getting informed 'laypersons' ideas would be far more helpful. Will follow this with interest.

Mrs Forgetful if you have that website address I would be very interested.

We're just waiting for the bedtime routine story to be delivered. Next on the list should be a social story about toilet-training. I'd be happy to post them on here as we get them.

Just heard about another Soc Stories book that has photos of real children doing whatever. Its by someone called Dr Jed Baker.
