URGENT HELP PLEASE! Developmental Percentiles

Hi,

Can someone please explain to me slowly, like I'm stupid (I'm not, but my brain is fried) how percentiles work?

I know the basics, 50th percentile is in the middle, above that and below that are either above or below average, but are still classed as "normal" for the age of the child.

At what point is a percentile NOT "normal" for the age of the child? I have a meeting with DS2's school on Thursday regarding getting 1:1 for nursery. His Griffiths test puts him below 1st percentile in 4 areas, I need to know if this is still age appropriate, just on the low end, or if this is completely outside the age parameters.

under 1st percentile means that 99% of the peer group will perform better and is asaik considered severe.
my Dd's Salt/EP assessments came back in the 1st percentile range and her difficulties are described as 'severe'.

Usually the top 25% are considered above average and the bottom 25 % below average but the further away from the middle you get the more extreme the issue either above or below.

In my authority the cut off for help with motor skills is the 15th centile! Dd3's visual percption in on the 9th so she gets OT input!

If you have some very high scores and some very low its called a spikey profile!

Madly they can say that right down at 5% isn't too low ( eh?) but yes my ds scores 1%. I asked his OT "so in 100 people, mini 2boys is the worse 1. So no one could be worse than him?" Answer - no. He is the worse

Okay. With the four areas he was below the 1st percentile, as in he wasn't even in the range. Speech is at 10th percentile, practical reasoning (his best one) is at 30th percentile.

He is an awesome strawberry picker though, so ner to the world.

My ds scores 1% at formulated sentences, but if you piss him off he could bang on for ages about how you've offended him. He's quite articulate then
