GP referral for dyslexia assessment??

Starting thread for a friend. She has concerns that her DS (10) is dyslexic. When she approached the school they advised she see GP for a referral. However GP has said nothing to do with them!

Think she is hoping to go down NHS route as she doesn't have money for private assessments, but is this option available?

Thanks for thoughts

she needs to see an educational psychologist so you need to get the school to refer her but the school may be reluctant. your LA also may also have a specialist teaching service with staff that can dx dyslexia. I had to go privately to dyslexia action to get a dx for my own dd at age 10

In our area dyslexia assessments aren't funded locally by health boards. GPs can't refer or arrange them, they have to be done privately.

They can be done through an EP for the purposes of statementing/assessment but are then funded through Education rather than Health.

Posted too soon! I meant to say, in summary they are not a health issue but an education one so your friend may want to explore further via her LEA.
