Talk to me about Carers allowance

I have just been awarded DLA for my DS.

I went in to tell my DS's SENCO as she was the one who advised me to claim and she also said I should now be claiming Carers allowance. How does this work. I obviously need to fill out some paperwork but is it just a paper exercise, will they need a lot of info.

All of this is a bit new to me.

you automatically qualify if you are earning less than £110 per week and you DS gets middle or high rate care DLA (you don't get
it for low rate care). If you have a partner who earn it does not matter. it is only based on your income.

tell tax credits about the DLA award (there is a disability element and your tax credits should go up). once you get carers allowance let tax credits know too as it counts as income for TC purposes.

carers is a very straight forward form to fill
in. nothing like claiming Dla

and it is £62 per week.

Thanks. I don't receive tax credits. Do I still need to let inland revenue know.

Dla pushes your tax credits up. so you might receive them now that your DS gets Dla. If you don't want to claim, don't ring them but it might be worth checking it out depending on your financial circumstances.

have you checked the hmrc online tax credit calculator? might be worth having a look if you qualify with Dla.

We stopped getting tax credits when Dd2 left education but then when I told them we were getting DLA it kicked back in. Its not a lot but pays for my fuel on a normal school week!

I am just about to reduce my hours at work and claim carers allowance because Dd3 isnt coping at school and its all too flippin stressful.

Have heard that the form is ok.

Good luck Flowers

we only get TC because of Dd's Dla too.

Carer's form is very straightforward. If you aren't earning it is little more than name address NI no etc. Bit more info needed if you work but really not at all offputting.

As I have two getting DLA we would I think get some TCs but I must admit I have put off claiming as that is slightly more complicated.
