Useful resources to explain Orthodontic treatment

Can anyone suggest some suitable resources to explain what is likely to happen to my gorgeous son? He has High functioning Autism with very limited communication skills - yes I do know that's a bit unusual.

Visual resources or places that I can borrow equipment or models would be useful. Also books (so I can understand better myself) and books with pictures so he can study for himself.

I have asked his special needs dentist. I have looked on YouTube. I have looked on the NAS website.

I REALLY don't want to freak him out but, equally, I don't want him to just undergo a lot of scary stuff and not be prepared.

I'd be very interested to hear from parents who have had to make decisions about orthodontic treatment of any kind.

Thank you

I've just had a similar problem. DS has just had a removable brace fitted and could not find any resources anywhere. I tried school (asd specialist school), local asd outreach and various websites but there is nothing out there. I ended up making up my own social story with pictures etc from google. DS did freak out a few days before he got his brace fitted and ended up promising him a new lego set if it at least let the dentist fit them. Once they were in his mouth he was fine. He had a wobble about 3 days later but after that he has been ok and worn them every day and night without any fuss.

Thanks fairgame, that's good to hear. We are off for the first meeting the with the orthodontist on Wednesday so I will quiz them then.

I'm planning to employ a social story (when I know more clearly what is likely to happen) but I can't help feeling that tricks are being missed!
