Hi, I'm looking for information on Meath school. I come across this looking on web for schools specialised in Speech and Language, my little boy has significant speech delay wondering if this school would support his needs. He currently is attending a mainstream nursery speech unit getting speech therapy (15mins a day 5 days a week) currently waiting for him to be statemented.
Going for a visit to Meath school in April and am considering paying for a 2 day assessment to be done?? Any information will be much appreciated..

Hi

DS did the assessment at Meath.
He found it very intensive as he was assessed one-one for 4 hours, this did not include him being Informally assessed around the school and the classroom.

The speech therapy report was ok. The educational psychologist report was really good. Though honestly, the whole report was basically what I already knew ,just very detailed.

They didn't tell me much about placement at the school as I already decided that I did not want DS to go there.

They assessment team are very blunt, I already knew of DS significant needs and how this already has impact, so I was already prepared by their comments. But if you are a parent who is just at the beginning stages of finding out their kids needs. Well be very prepared is all I can say!

They are really good and well informed. But if I had my time again, I would of waited till DS was older as he was very young when he was assessed there and he found it too intensive.

Overall the school is a very good school, but hearing from other parents, they are quite selective of the students they take in.

I highly recommend you visit the school.

Oops forgot to add.

Every child is different so your son may not find the assessment intensive, he may really enjoy it.

Good luck.

Thankyou adrianna22, how old was ur child when assessed? Mine is 4 and I find the unit he is at now isn't catering for his needs, although the speech therapy is good. I feel as a parent there missing something with him. Will definitely have a visit and hoping assessment is more detailed then ones you get from nhs, even if it's just for peace of mind.

DS was four when he was assessed. But it all depends on your child's level and where his at.

We are going to get another assessment from somewhere else.

Good luck.

Yeah I'm sure there figure him out, fingers crossed

Has your DS been diagnosed? Or have they just diagnosed him with a speech and language delay?

N1kk10118 · 11/02/2015 16:22

Yeah just significant speech delay. Nothing wrong with hearing at all had loads of blood tests.

Edicational psychologist reviewed him at school recently just waiting for the council panel to decide whether to statement him and keep him in school as it's not in our catchment area.

He still is uncomfortable around people and socially he isn't interested in playing with any children, even his brother wants to play alone. A lot of sounds rather then speech, uses makaton for signing and communicating, says about 10 words clearly.

How about ur child?

Frustration is at its peak, the minute he gets bored he throws things around especially when his uncomfortable and not at home

My son has been at Meath since age 4, it's been amazing. Happy to answer any questions. After our first visit we knew it was the right place for him. We asked our local authority to fund the 2 day assessment to see if Meath would offer him a place, they agreed to fund it. Worth a try if you decide it is right setting for your child.
