Have recently had speech and language assessment for ds1 who is 5 1/2. Speech is fine, but has language problems. Therapist said today that he does have signs of Auditory Processing Disorder (which I kind of knew) but can't be diagnosed by audiologist until 7. I have searched the net and did some reading but I am wondering from rl point what it really means and do they get past it. Anyone here have any experiece?? tia

Hi, I taught a child with APD. I came across it a few times in the last few years so I don't think it is very unusual. FOr me it meant being aware that what I said wasn't necessarily going to be understood so I did alot of asking them to explain what I had just said in their own words type things.

We also used to play all kinds of games to try and improve it. We also used to do 'listening comprehensions' which really focused them in on listening skills. There were great improvements in the children I saw, so its certainly worth working on. You're very lucky to have it diagnosed so early.

WriggleJiggle you sound lovely. So far response from ds's teacher is that she doesn't believe he has it and that he "plays" on not listening. Luckily we are coming to end of school year here and the teacher I have requested for next year is fab.

Have thought something was "wrong" since he was about 3 but kept being put off by doctor and nursery staff. They kept saying he could hear fine. Of course he can. He can't process it. Went private and saw hearing specialist/language specialist myself.

What age groups did you teach WJ??

Thank you for the replies. Humphrey I am in Australia so long way to send the book but thank you v much for the offer. I might look in local library for it.

sphil I also think the structure of yr 1 next year will be much better. Teacher this year is useless. She just thinks he is naughty and disruptive. he has been in trouble every day this year.

Speech therapist said you can work through it and "train" the listening etc. Is this right??
