Refused ed. psych and statement.

I asked the head teacher again for d's who has adhd, ASD, hypermobility and dyspraxia for obtaining a statement. The new educational health care plan (?) and access to ed. psych for ds1. Again she has refused, but says she will do the paperwork in y5 ready for high school.

I'm going to look into getting him a private assessment and we are on the waiting list for OP and PT, hopefully it'll be ds turn next month. Apparently there is only one cÅ?inic per month in this area.

The reasons she refuses are ds is "too clever". Ds was at a party over the weekend and chatting away to one of the parents, who is a teacher over the border in the next county and she immediately spotted he was asd and wanted to know was he on the G&T programme and was horrified to discover we are receiving next to no support for him at school.

I need to get my arse in better gear, time is ticking on.

As Meir says apply yourself for an EHCP plan. Without wishing to frighten you my ds's problems became much worse over Year4/Year5 and I really do think that extra support then would have helped negate some of the difficulties.

Yes apply yourself. Once you apply, if they agree to carry to assess for an ECHP you usually get an ed psych assessment as part of the process.
My son is bright and had a statement for 27.5 hours of 1 to 1 in ms. He is now in an ASD specialist school. It doesn't matter how intelligent they are, if they need lots of help to access education then they should have an ECHP.

I think the head is fobbing you off, year 5 could be too late, I applied in year 5 and now in year 6 no closer to getting one and time is running out, you need to factor extra time in just in case you get refused at any part along the way and need to appeal as each appeal can add up to an extra 6 months onto the timeline

Apply yourself and asap to boot. You are her best - and only - advocate here.

Yes, I'm wishing I had started a bit sooner, my DS is in Yr 6 now and I am nervously waiting to hear the outcome of his assessment and whether a statement / EHC plan will be issued, having applied in January. I thought 18 months would be long enough, but I'm worried now, if I have to appeal then that's another 6 months, then if I have to appeal the content that's another 6 months. Plus secondary transfer thrown into the mix.

Well I've emailed school formally requesting ed. psych and g&t assessment and formally notifying them we are applying directly for EHC.

You can self refer to EP too.just ring up or email EP (details should be on council website / local offer) and say school has refused to allocate any of their EP time to your child and you disagree with that decision and would like EP to see your child's and have applied EHC.

Be polite in the meeting and thank them for any seemingly genuine or generous offers. However, don't agree to anything at the time. Tell them you'll consider/talk it over with x/take advice etc and get back to them shortly.

Go home and immediately write up all they agreed or offered or even anything they said which sounded a bit odd I.e 'your child will not get an EHCP' or 'we don't have the resources for that' to 'clarify' that you understood.

This will give you a data trail of evidence and attitude that will help later.

Been in again and headteacher has agreed to an Ed. Psych referral and will support us in obtaining an education healthcare plan. They don't have a G&T plan, but will be buying extra services for him. Thanks everyone!
