ABA tutor need in Wimbledon

Hi,

We want to run a home based ABA program for our 3 year old son who has high functioning autism.

I have tried ABA Community and ABA-UK, but haven't got many replies from there. Any of you have other suggestions? If your tutors have some availabilities would you please let me know?

I am looking for weekday afternoons and weekend tutors.

Have you contacted NAS to see if they can offer any advice? Also Merton council is supposed to have a SEN division (but very good luck with that!!! Think the provision in this borough is pretty poor overall!!)

Did you get your tutors through NAS? I haven't try the council so I am not sure how helpful they could be.

Have you thought about getting yourself/family/friends trained up to do the tutoring yourself?
Or you may want to consider getting students (perhaps those on psychology courses or child development type ones)from your local Uni trained up.
Have you found a consultant yet and if so, can they recommend anyone?
Also consider recruiting people to train up through nannying websites (you can search for people with SN experience) and I know of others who have used sites such as Gumtree.
One last thing is to try and contact the university of Bangor who run a Masters in behavioural Analysis - many of the students live all over the country so you may find one that is close to you.

I can't see myself tutoring at the beginning, but I will definitely get involved in every meeting.
I remember one mum mentioned students are not very reliable so that set me back a bit.
I am going to look at the nanny websites.

There are 2 firms you could try - ABAtutorfinder and ABAtutorship

I know this inst hugely useful in short term, but what has worked for me is:

1 - Keep looking. A good ABA tutor is like a good nanny - they are there and what may work for one family may not work for another. But if you keep looking you will find one
2 - If you have friends/friends' older kids/cousins/babysitters who love to play with your kid, they are better than an 'ABA tutor'. the only bit I feel needs to be 'taught' is discreet trials
3 - I have lately found that 'experienced' tutors are charging over the top. I dont know about all the families, but we run a 35-40 hour/week program and its not sustainable to pay all the tutors £20/hour!

Been there and after looking for months, we had our old babysitter come and play with our 5 yr old one evening because she wanted to see our daughter.. within an hour, my husband and I knew we had to hire her as a tutor and train her

Yes I too found and trained up tutors from nanny/childcare firms, students, and my son's SEN swimming teacher

I do think nanny can be good tutor candidates. Do I need an experienced lead tutor to guide the new tutor?

Patience - you could train her. Or the lead tutor or supervisor. If she is your current nanny, then just have her observe a few sessions. Or record them for her to watch. Then let her work on mastered targets and then move to new targets.

It's discreet trials which needs practice. I don't know how much those are needed on your program. We need lots.

salondon - 'discreet trials' is a new word to me, I am googleing it.

Do I need to pay agency to get a nanny then train her up?

I did get one v good tutor that way, recruited her from (I think the name was) nanny-select, then got supervisor to train her up

We found someone on childcare.co.uk - we didn't have to pay anything to register or use the site but that may have changed. You can do an advanced search for people with SN experience if you want although you shouldn't rule out people without this as there's a lot more to being a good ABA tutor.
