On my sons support letter it says he has a complex developmental delay is this a broad statement ? does that mean severe or complicated ? Just a little confused as we discuss ASD mainly never anything about that.

Thanks for reading and any help !

Asd is a development delay, a delay in the typical neurological development.

Global or general development delay would mean a delay affecting physical development too.

I would take complex to mean unusual, not affecting him in a straightforward way. Eg with a child who was very prem and had a general development delay they may be described as functioning 6 months to a year behind average. That would be mostly across the board, in all aspects of development. A child with ASD can be very advanced in some respects of their development, average in others, and behind or very behind in other ways.

That's my interpretation anyway.

He sounds like my ds at 4.5 Smile

It's sometimes called a spiky profile i.e. very good at somethings - and very below average in others. My ds has a high IQ, but very low social ability, for example.

Also, because of high ability in some areas, they can mask other difficulties. That's what complex about it.
