Hi after a year of waiting I have finally received my daughters proposed statement but it's only one side of A4, really vague and doesn't quantify any help. She is only 4 and starting in mainstream, she will def require 1:1 support but this isn't mentioned it just says "daily support form named adult to work on targets in individual education plan" and "a programme to improve communication"

She starts in a week and I am freaking out the right support isn't in place. I want to challenge the statement but really want to see an example of a good sen statement can anyone help me find one? I have been searching google all day and found nothing. Been trying to phone ipsea all day but can't get through.

Thanks so much for any help

Xx

One side of a4 is definitely not a statement, its a joke!
Excuse me for stating the obvious but is that definitely the full statement they have sent? Has it got parts 1 - 6 on that one sheet of paper?
A statement should set out the child's needs, what provision is needed to meet those needs and who is providing said provision. It should state the hours/funding allocated and what it will be used for

E.g. xx requires 5 hours of support each week to improve social skills in line with a programme of therapy devised by the SALT. This will be provided on a 1-1 basis or in small groups by an appropriately trained learning support assistant.

Or something along those lines.

I like Ambitious about Autism, but if it were my child's statement, I would want the speech therapy provision to be more specific. Too many "access to.." in Part 3 for my liking for a start!

Thanks for replying, there is a bit more to it but not much, the one side A4 is just parts 3 to 6. The list of objectives and education provision is so minimal and doesn't give any indication of how much support she will get. For example

Under the objective 'cognitive development' it says:

'to develop attention, concentration and her ability to participate in national curriculum subjects'

and the educational provision just says

'specialist teachers to advice on future needs, Set appropriate work and Small class groups'

It's just so vague it's not offering any help at all, I'm going to have write the whole thing myself and tAke it to meeting, feel so depressed. Thanks for your help.

The statement should not be vague at all. provision should be specified and where possible quantified. for example 'dd will require at least 60 minutes of direct speech and language therapy a week. this will be on a 1:1 basis provided within school by a paediatric qualified SLT experienced in teaching children with expressive language impairment.'

words such as 'access to' and 'opportunities for' are too vague, most LA's know this and are just trying it on.

is this the finalised statement? if so you need to appeal to SENDIST asap. once the LA realise you are serious about this they will probably tighten up the wording as they wont want to embarrass themselves at court, although you may have to still attend a hearing.
just to give you an idea my dd's finalised statement was 6 pages of vague waffle. we have had one tribunal and are just about to attend another and now it is 15 pages of specified and quantified provision and in depth description of need.

It needs to be rejected out of hand. Statements should be both specified and quantified in terms of provision. This one clearly is neither, its completely and utterly useless in its current form.

I would put the appeal into SEND asap. There is no excuse that the LEA can give here for giving you such a crap document.

IPSEA and or SOSSEN should be able to tell you what the document should state in terms of provision.

Send me a message if you would like me to email you my ds's statement for comparison, he is the same age.
