Literal interpretation

Ds has homework spelling words and then at the bottom of the sheet is aliteracy task related to the spelling words.
Today he had the numbers eleven through to twenty. Below there are squares with a number of shapes in them. Obviously he is meant to count the shapes and write the number to concrete the spelling words. Instead, he has written sqers, hexagn, tringle etc. basically named the shapes inthe boxes rather than the number. The instruction was 'write the correct word for the boxes'

Sigh. We suspect he is dyslexic, and his brother has dx of ADHD, traits of hfa and is referred to the multi disciplinary team for a full assessment of aspergers.

Do we need to start looking as ds2 for hfa as well?? He is very sensitive (low tolerance) whereas ds1 has a high pain tolerance but we are aware they can be either. He is also dreamy, a chatterbox, distracted, constantly has something in his mouth - jumper ties, glasses, goggles strap.

Wdyt?

I know what you mean, we have just been through this with DD after DS was dx with AS. I think the idea is to see how much his difficulties are affecting his life, mental health and the life of the people around him i.e do you have to accommodate for him at home a lot, does he get very anxious (apart from the usual anxiety sign, I would includes major meltdowns,"tantrum like behaviour", rage, hurting others... ) and that gets in the way of normal life, activities.... If this is true then my understanding is that this is when it is time to seek help. Hope this helps.

I think i lot of children would do the same as your DS for that question.

I agree with Molly, if his difficulties are getting in the way of his normal day to day functioning then seek help.
Lots of people show traits of ASD but don't have the condition so don't panic just yet.
