Can I request a preferred school if Ds has statement

Hi, I never expected to get this far so quickly and although haven't quite got the proposed statement I'm feeling confident. Yet I'm panicking to know that I only have 15 days if we get the proposed statement to put down our preferred school choice. (Is this correct)
If a school is full, can we still name it as our preferred school, do children with statements get into mainstream schools that are suitable to their needs if they are full or can we only consider schools that have vacancies for my Ds's year group.

You can't get into a school that is full but a child with a statement will get priority over other kids (except those in care).

Okey dokey thank you. Better get Ds's name down on the continuing interest list.

If you name a mainstream school then the LA must name it unless the education of your child at that school would be prejudicial to the efficient education of the other children or the efficient use of resources. If the school is full, it might still be able to fit in one more child without prejudicing efficient education. It would be worth trying to talk to the LA person dealing with the statement to get a feel for whether they are likely to be willing to name your choice of school.

Once you request to name that school on the statement, a copy is sent to them anyway for consideration/consultation.
I've just looked on IPSEA and they say the LA can name a school even if it is full (case 26). Grin
