special needs party

I got a phonecall the other day from a local organisation that have been passed our details.
They said that they would like us to go on their register and that they organise things like day trips and football/cricket coaching for children with special needs.

She also said that there is a party tomorrow night with a disco/magician and that they would like me and DH to take DD and DS.

So i told her that DS is AS and hates loud music/bright lights and she said "Oh but there will be other children there with ASD and we are specifically not playing loud music or having bright/flashing lights"

So i had a chat with DS and he wants to go [faint emotion].
So we are going and i will let you know how it goes

springreens we have organised a party for DS next week.
We have hired a sports hall with a bouncy castle and football and we are doing our own music as we can control the volume!!!

Jenk, hope it goes well.
Springgreens, I would say definitely stick to plenty of physical play. We used to hire one of those children's torture chambers (soft play room) that we could have all to ourselves and just let them go. That way I could invite all the children with ASD I know, their siblings and parents without having to worry. There are other possibilities, depending on what is available in your area - swimming parties, bowling parties, trampolining parties etc etc.

Springgreens, I think we lead parallel lives! I'm thinking ahead to DS2's 4th birthday too. So far ideas include:

Hiring small bouncy castle to put in local church hall.

Inviting grandparents and no more than 6 other children (including DS1). Quiet, considerate friends of DS1 probably, + DS2's one 'friend' who's a real sweetie.

Putting up a screen and showing a Thomas video.

Bubble blower

Balloons - helium if poss, Thomas shaped even better.

Playing DS2's favourite CDs. (OK, CD)

Having gf/cf food that everyone can eat so we don't have to police DS2. Sausages and chips/wedges/crisps poss.

Lots of ideas that have been mentioned here in fact! Let us know what you decide to do - when is your DS 4? Ds2 is Oct 5th.

I was definately thinking bouncy castle if at all poss and my mum had planned to crank up her fantastic bubble machine (she runs a playgroup and this goes down really well there)! Am also going to make a CD of ds's favourite tunes and maybe hire some swirly - disco-type - lights as he's been really into these in the past (seeks out visual stimulation all the time).

Sphil was also thinking about doing chips. All kids love chips don't they ? and it takes the stress out of worrying about the GFCF. Ds is 4 on 30th September (our boys are v.close in many ways!). He was due on Oct 1st.

It's so good to be looking forward to ds's bday this year. To be honest, it normally depresses me for months, but things have really moved forward for us this year and ds will - hopefully - be alot more involved and aware of it all .I've also been able to think of a few things to buy him. a good feeling.

Its tonight!!!

I just received the newsletter from the organisation and on the front is a childhood friend of mine who i havent seen for years.
Her son has CP and im really hoping that they will be there tonight.
