What to expect at ot appointment.

Hi. Ds has his (first?) occupational therapy appointment tomorrow. We're in the road for assessment for ASD.

Can anyone please give me some insight into what to expect at the appointment? Thanks

My son has dyspraxia so his referral was for hyper mobility. He had to do some exercises like hop, jump balance, use pen etc. lots of questions and some physical examination but mostly exercises. Things like his sensory processing disorder all came out from this and questions. Took around 1.5 hours and some more questions and a questionnaire at a following appointment. Ds got his dyspraxia dx from this

Usually when assessing a child who may have ASD, the OT would complete a sensory checklist (with you or score it after the appointment).
They would also do a gross and fine motor assessment.

They may do a visual perception assessment (matching pictures), a visual-motor assessment (a language free one that looks at how hands and eyes work together).

Make sure he is dressed in comfortable loose clothing (joggers and layer a long and short sleeve T in case he gets warm). Have a small snack and a drink, in case it takes an extended time.

If you've things you want to say or discuss, write them down so you dont forget.

The OT made lots of notes and said we will get a copy of her report. She did a lot of games/watching to check on fine and gross motor skills - no worries there apart from pencil grip. So we're going to work on that.

She did lots of sensory activities with him, foam, touch. Things like that. Seeing her again in 2 weeks.
