Disabled Facilities Grant

Hi all,

Wondered if anyone has had any experience with the DFG please and how it works. We are currently having our ground floor study converted to a bedroom and installing a new ensuite wetroom in the room that is currently our kitchen for my daughter as we need ground level living for her. Due to the fact that we are losing our kitchen for the wetroom, we have to build an extension in order to have a kitchen. Does anyone know if the DFG will cover any building work for the new kitchen and, if so, to what extent? Will new units be covered or will we be expected to used all the existing units etc.? Any experiences with the DFG would also be appreciated.

You will only get DFG for something solely for the disabled person. So if you hadn't started converting your study yourself then you may have got that funded. You may still be able to get a wet room funded if there is no other bathroom facility that your daughter can access but bear in mind that the whole process can take a very long time!
If you look at your local council website you should be able to find something helpful.
You will need to get an OT to come and do an assessment first and then they decide whether anything is needed. They may well suggest an adaptation of existing space rather than any new build.

The local councils usually have grants. Ours has a 30 K upper limit. You need to be assessed by them and an OT to assess needs of the child or disabled person.

They will then organise and pay for everything. They will only do what is for the disabled person and if you lose a room that's tough as they won't build another dining room or bedroom. We had a lift installed and that took away a study upstairs and the dining area. We self funded an extra room extension and they paid to enlarge and turn the bathroom into a wet room and level access decking and ramp. They have also put in two hoists. I'm not sure if they will back date/ pay for work so contact them ASAP.

Can some -one advise me on legal health , my son has a learning disabilty and become very poorly lady July with catatonic he nearly died due to his complex needs he went into a secure hospital where he was treated very badly restrain 240 times left in his own urine , we fought so hard to get him out all professional failed him. Due to this he's not the same boy and he's suffered so much we just want our happy beautiful son back. Can anyone advise how we take legal action . Thank you so much
