My 23 month old daughter has just been assessed by SLT and they have said that she has severe expressive and receptive speech delay and the possibility of 'some high functioning thing' going on.

What does 'high functioning' actually mean?

High functioning autism means autism with average/above average IQ.

But a SALT cannot dx autism (it is ususlly a multi disciplinary assessment).

Are you under a developmental paed? If not, I would request a referral.

SALT has done the referral to the paediatrician. Hearing test has been done and was fine.

We have another SLT appointment next week to see where we go from here.

I self referred to the SLT when DD was 18 months.
