IEP targets if previous ones not met?

Ds's CT has emailed me stating its time to set new IEP targets for ds and he would very much like my input.

He has attached old evaluated IEP and 3 previous targets are 'partly achieved with some help'

To me it would be logical to continue with targets until achieved, rather than changing them?

Change the help if only partly achieved?

Targets were crap anyhow, would you take this opportunity to change them completely?

Target one

Ds will become more able to accept ‘constructive criticism’ of his creative writing tasks

To begin to write in a cursive style.

Target partly achieved with help. comments - Ds has worked hard to improve his handwriting and enjoys being praised for it.

Target two

Ds will be able to accept that there are other methods of doing things and to at least have a go at alternative

Target partly achieved. Comments ds is less anxious in mathematics and is more willing to have a go

Target three

Ds will communicate to staff when he is anxious/ worries/ upset and staff will deal with incident at the time.

Target partly achieved. Comments ds manages to communicate some of his worries to me in Science. He seems satisfied that his needs are met.

A load of vague, unmeasurable nonsense!

what are they actually doing to achieve these (vague, unmeasurable and probably continual) targets......... nightmare. The teachers comments don't even seem to relate to the targets I don't know where to begin, sorry.

Target one - lots of praise, regular handwriting practice.

Target two - lots of praise, encourage ds to consider other methods, even if he resorts back to other methods.

Target three - ds will communicate his worries to x, y z and they will listen and provide reassurance.

Bit like a DIY IEP! ds WILL do this, ds WILL do that, with no mention of HOW!

Ds is receiving SALT, OT and counselling input. I would very much like to get them to do their job and write some IEP targets.

Maybe I could write the targets and then just write 'ask OT, counsellor, SALT for strategies' otherwise what is the point of their involvement!

Polter, none of them have any idea of what ds's difficulties actually are! (with the exception of counsellor, ds is finding his weekly session with her very helpful and is doing his very best not to scratch)

I have your thread bookmarked actually, your IEP one, I might use some of them, with 'OT to supply strategies' etc once I have spelt out the difficulty

claw it's not an IEP it's a wish list. About as much use as:

'I will own a house in the country'

I think what school are trying to do is address the difficulties they see, then leaving SALT, OT and counsellor to their own devices, rather than incorporating them into an IEP.

Handwriting for example OT should be giving strategies.

'Constructive criticism' what is it about the criticism that makes it constructive! - counsellor should be helping.

I don't even know where to start! Im torn between pointing out SALT, OT etc need to provide targets (knowing they don't know what his difficulties are and they will be inappropriate) and just rewriting the whole thing again, addressing his actual difficulties.

The headings on the IEP says it all really, 'my targets' 'what will I do', im no, no, no what will YOU do. A target has to be measurable in the first place, how on earth do you measure 'constructive criticism' or 'trying a new method, but resorting back to old method'

How does this sound?

By (insert date) after daily practise with Mr/Msxxxx of 10 minutes. Given a topic, ds will compose (insert number of paragraphs required) in which each will include a topic sentence, at least (insert anticipated number) supporting details and logical sequence

Yes Claw, and then you should humbly accept their praise for being so good at this and offer them some consultancy at £20 per target for other kids.

Thanks Star, CT already asked me to write his IEP's, he obviously isn't joking!

At least this school are asking for input I suppose, rather than telling me never to contact them again!
