DD2 and homework - any thoughts?

Following on from PolterGoose's vids, I thought I'd upload the videos of DD2 doing her homework. They're quite long, so I don't blame you if you don't watch it all, or any!

takes just under 20 minutes to produce 'We were going to the shop today because we needed to buy food.'

It has her more erratic outbursty reactions.

was 12 minutes to produce 'Who are they? They look funny.'

It has her more 'happy flappy' behaviour.

I'd love any observations/comments/views, if you are bored and have the time.

I'll talk it through with her. I might have to get 3 to stop the fights!

That gave me the Sunday afternoon nightmares Grin DS is just the same, although he's slightly improved now having found strategies that work iyswim?

He finds it very difficult to think of a sentence with an abstract word - eg where, when etc. But has got better at using words that have a meaning that can be explained - eg slice.

He gets frustrated as when we've built a sentence he cant remember it - cue the strop because he now has to write it - him dictating worked. He now has an Ipad (not sure if you do or is an option for you) which has a text to speak app. He can type in his sentence and check it makes sense. Then we print or he copies to paper if he can still manage more work.

What level is your DD at writing? My DS is quite delayed and he still struggles with connectives - we explain them by using PEE - point, example, explanation. He is just learning things like because........... I ask because I know you've had a shite time with SALT and we saw one today. She explained because of the literal thinking and lack of creative thinking thats what creates the difficulties for him in writing fictional text.

DS can't handle rubbing out - he'll happily cross out constantly though. I've learnt to focus on good use of language and if its unreadable slightly messy I'll write it for him underneath. I just say he's worked really hard so I'll write it out again as Mr C will want to read his lovely sentence and it'll save him time reading past all the crossings out. If he's really not in the mood to write it - he dictates and I write.

Surprisingly taking off the pressure has made him more willing to do it. (most of the time!)

Thanks, youarewinning. I don't know what level her writing is at. It was 1a at the end of y1, but the teacher snorted when I mentioned that in October and said she wasn't producing the work of 1a in class.

Who knows?

DS was apparently a 2B when he left infants - still is in year 5 Hmm
He was actually about a 1a when he left infants so you can see how slow his progress is! (Although on paper he's made none in 2.5 years!)

The strange thing is since I kinda gave up trying to teach him to write using the rules - which he can quote like a wiki dictionary! - and concentrated on talking about what he could write.
