My 4 year old DS has just started school, I have always felt he was a little different but nursery etc have never raised any concerns.
School are struggling to get him to do any work he says no when they ask him to sit and do writing etc He can only just write his name, his phonics are good and has just started reading. They have concerns re his behaviour he is inappropriate speaking to adults ( told the PE teacher your not the boss of the school I'm not doing it) he is making silly noises in class and being generally silly I think.
He is quite immature and silly and has quite a quirky personality. His nursery report says he has a unique personality!

He's at a private school so I'm not sure what happens in identifying any problems

Where do in start in looking if there is anything more to his behaviour?

Thank you

Private schools aren't keen on having pupils with SEN of any kind so I doubt you'll get much help TBH. (bitter experience there). How is he with you? Does he do as he's told at home?

From what you've said in your OP he could just be a naughty boy who has been allowed to be rude to adults because he is cute. (and I say that as the mum of 3 kids with SEN and 2 NT). If nursery didn't have any concerns did you before he went to school?

If you feel there is something to be concerned over, GP/HV might refer him or you could ask SENCO (and yes there will be one even if not proactively) if they have anyone they use. Agree you may find more support in state sector longer term. Private schools have a thing for managing out those who are awkward in class.

can i suggest you pm TOWIE. Her experience and general knowledge about the "system" helped clarify our position with regards to support very quickly.
