DS2 is having a bad week I think social stories might be the way to go with helping him with certain aspects of school that he is struggling with.

Can anyone recommend good resources online or any books, particularly with pictures?

Thanks

I have been reading Do Unto Otters which is a lovely book and seemed to speak straight to my Dd.

I was on a course today and they were advocating social stories. They said to google Carol Gray. Also they said your SALT, of you have one, should be able to provide them.x

If you have one, oops. They also recommend write your own and if your child is able, then get them to help, draw pictures etc.

Thank you, we do have a SALT so will email her tomorrow. Will also look at do unto otters and carol gray.

I have the NAS notes from their Help course on writing social stories, if you'd like me to email them to you. I found them much more helpful than the Carol Gray method, and simpler to use. It really is much better if you write your own because then you can tailor them specifically to your own child's situation and incorporate personal photographs etc that will engage them better than off the shelf stories.

I used to write dozens back when ds was younger (he's nearly 15 now and no longer needs them) and they were very effective. My advice is to devise a format (font, layout, pictures etc) that you and your son are comfortable with and stick with it. Familiarity and predictability are important. Also, read them together often - once or twice isn't enough. Eg, the story we had for 'Going To Swimming Lessons' we'd read every week before the lesson, so it was fresh in his head. You have to have realistic expectations if they're going to work.

Would you mind emailing me the notes on how to write social stories please? My HFA DD's anxiety levels are high at the moment and I'm hoping they will help.

streakybacon · 10/11/2013 07:46

Sure. PM me with an email address and I'll send them either today or tomorrow (busy busy Wink)
