Visual memory? Dyslexia?

DS2's teacher mentioned recently that it might be that he has a problem with his visual memory. Despite pointing out numbers to him visually on a regular basis, he is (at 4yo) still really struggling to recognise numbers. He also struggles to recognise letters and is rarely able to recognise his name.

I've made flash cards with the numbers on one side and a corresponding number of dots on the other in order to practice his numbers 0-5 with him. After three days of going over them a couple times a day, he is only just approaching consistent with the numbers 1 and 2. He has said "2" quite a few times when he sees 5 and seems a bit annoyed that he's wrong on that one.

So... would it be too early to ask for some feedback into getting this checked somehow? (his visual memory and for dyslexia, I mean, as from what I've read, one often goes along with the other) Is it even possible to check at his age? What's the best route for this as this is completely different from the problems DS1 has had (he of the number obsessive!).

I would say that you would be told that he is too young to be assessed for Dyslexia. You may need to find a different way to teach him number and letter recognition. Have you thought about getting his visual tracking checked? I would go and see a Behavioural Optometrist here and ask their advice. Has DS2 started school yet?

Sorry I have just seen that he has started school! Confused

he has seen a behavioural optometrist last year and was prescribed glasses, although for a definite visual problem.

Did they mention what the tracking was like? Just wondering about Irlen coloured acetates.

seemed fine from what they could tell... he's not due to go in for awhile... I may ring them and ask them a few questions about it though... thanks
