Baby safe feeder

Has anyone tried one of these
DS4 saw the SALT yesterday and she recommended one to help develop his jaw for chewing and hopefully speech.

Yeah we have one of those.

The issue I had was that DD1 who has all the problems wouldn't use it (she'd chew the handle end but refused the food end - with much screaming and hysterics which is v unusual for her).

DD2, NT, gets on fine with it. But she also (less than 2 weeks into solids) eats whole rice, sweet potato chips, whole broccoli florets, magazines, cardboard, and scraps of material. So seems to have no need for it whatsoever.

I can see that it would be useful because you have to chew to get the food out through the mesh of the bag. Plus you can give it to them and do something else without fear of choking, which means they can be chewing away on it all day, rather than just when you've got 100% attention to give them. Issue would be that the bag bit is quite difficult to clean. I tend to turn it inside out, rinse under the tap and bung in the delicates wash.

Used one for DS (NT) -- it was OK but (sad voice of experience) don't put banana in it or you'll never get it clean. Other stuff was OK.

ooh I got into a fight about these the other day on another thread. I think they are good- but agree about banana.

Apparently you can get them on ebay (new) for £5.

What was the fight about jjsovt? Arse about the ebay thing. This one just cost me nearly £15.00 with postage.

I did wonder about washing it.

It's mainly for my peace of mind - ds4 has a very sensitive gag reflex and I've lost count of the times I've whisked him from his highchair and whacked him on the back.

Ah tallmummy your ds sound like my ds3- which was exactly why I used it (I paid 15 quid as well!).

The fight was because someone came on and said she'd found this product and thought it was great, then a load of people piled in (imo) and said it looked like a waste of money and unecessary so I got annoyed (at the piling in, especially because I thought the opening poster was someone new) and said that whilst it might be unecessary for many children it was very useful for others, so then I was told I was being defensive and over-sensitive at which stage I pointed out that the opening poster had been jumped on. Usual mumsnet stuff. Barny over absolutely nothing.

I don't think you were being oversensitive Jimjams - they certainly seem to have their use, for which you made the argument well, and I don't think that anyone could deny that it has been useful for you.
Ususal Mumsnet problem IMO - a snapshot of life as a mum in a sentence. Mostly it can't be helped. This one won't kick off, not because everyones too scared of you JJ but because of the way that Tallmummy worded it. It becomes something that serves a real purpose rather than anxious-mum gadget.

Hi Jimjams - I watched that original post and I thought you were absolutely right to "pile in" - particularly if the OP was a newbie - I remember the sheer state of shock I lived in for weeks after posting for the very first time and was treated like I had murdered someone - I actually left MN for a while and lurked for ages before I posted again -
TBH - I saw those feeder thingies and did, for one brief nanosecond, contemplate getting one, but what put me off was the thought of more tat to clean!

Where is the other thread. I'm rubbish at doing searches. DS4 is having such a developmental burst at the moment that I'm trying to keep up. He loves his food - can't wait to give this gizmo a try.

Thanks coolmama - wow jimjams see what you mean. Wierd - i hadn't seen that thread or heard about the baby feeder 'till yesterday. ds4 has a so far undiagnosed condition with hypotonia and GDD. The baby feeder looks like it could be perfect for him - we shall see.

Well on the other thread iirc the op was on her third child, so I doubt she was that bothered about other people's opinions and her last message made me laugh. If she'd been a first timer it might have put her off for life, I hope it hasn't. Mumsnet seems to be going through a period of sneering at people's choices after a brief snapshot of their lives atm. I know it always has but somehow it seems worse atm.

jimjams the op in the other thread just asked if anyone had tried them, me and others just piled in with our opinions, whether we had tried it or not.

certainly didn't mean anything bad by it and as it was on weaning, rather than sp, i for one didn't really think about how this could help some children. i don't think it was intended to upset anyone, but i for one apologise if it did.
