DS Operation next week

Next Thursday DS is having an operation to remove a cyst from his eye, i have just phoned the ward and they say that we can take him up this afternoon for a pre-visit.

Not having done this before i wondered if anyone had any tips that i could ask them, our psych said to take pictures but i dont know if i feel comfortable with that, surely other patients wont like it?

I feel sorry for the staff next week thats all i can say when they have to give DS a needle, he will probably need sedating before the needle goes in!!!!

not sure of any real advice. ds(nt) has had lots of ops and had a problem with the needle. the last time they tried the "magic" cream didn't work so they let him breathe the "gas" he found that loads better. would this be better for you. also explain to them about his fears maybe they can sedate him before hand. don't worry they are used to it.
I would also ask for them to try and get him at the beginning of the list. last time ds was in one of dd;s friends was there and they had put her last!! i was really pleased when they moved her up the list even if it meant we had to wait longer.

Taking pictures sounds like a good idea !
Ask if you can take a piccie of the doctor and nurses ,the beds ,playroom,etc.It should help to get him prepared and give him visual clues about hospital.

We have taken lots of pictures, even in places like swimming pools, they let us in before the public.

So long as you don't take pictures of patients, children etc they should be fine.

Hiya, just got back from the hospital minus the camera cos it wasnt charged up.
The childrens ward is a small room with 4 to 6 beds in and i asked them could DS go in a room of his own or could they do him first.
"He looks fine to me" one nurse said
"Well thats because he,s being told everything in advance, belive me if he hadnt come before today you would have him having a major meltdown and upsetting all the other kids"
"Well dont you worry, you just leave it to us the professionals thats what we are here for"
Then she asked him did he like spongebob(he was wearing a spongebob t shirt)
"Erm......yes" he said sarcastically
"Oh you walk like spongebob, are YOU spongebob?"
"Dont be silly" he said
i laughed and DH had to walk out of the door as he was laughing too much.
My mum said "you shouldnt let him talk like that its rude"
so i said "its rude to ask an intelligent 9 year old boy a question you should be asking a 3 year old"

Hope it's the same nurse on duty next week jenk. You must be sooooo tempted to take her at her word and just let her get on with it with all her professional experience to draw on!!!!!!!!

yes she is on duty she looked rather pleased with her self when she said that, a mean thought crossed my mind and it was "i hope its you giving him the needle then" you wont be so pleased with yourself then will you?
