Just a quick question about school action plus!

Dd3 has been on school action plus for 12 months at least. During that time she has been supported by Salt and various nurture groups but never had any one to one.

She is really struggling at the moment especially in Literacy, she is frightened of the teacher and is panicking over everything.

[I have another thread running about school refusal]

Anyway I am considering either asking if she can go on a reduced timetable for a short time or asking if she can have one to one in Literacy to see if we can get to the bottom of what she is struggling with.

The Senco yesterday raised the question of applying for a statement but I dont feel that they have tried everything yet and as she is above average in terms of the national curriculum I just think we will get turned down at the first hurdle!

Any ideas??

Sorry didnt really get to the point,

Are schools obliged to provide one to one for chìldren on SA+ if they need it or is it something they can choose to do ?

I live in a different county but DS1 attends an Essex school. My home county say school can afford 1:1 from delegated budget but Essex LA seem to think the practice is nothing short of evil. Look at the links TOWIE provided. 1:1 = distressed child and later hoodie on high rise estate !!!!

So, it depends where you are.

Ok, there is a thing called Enhanced Provision in my LA. I am going to see if I can find out what this means and see if school will agree.

They say they want Dd3 in school and have said they want to help so maybe this is the way to go.

Thanks Smile

Enhanced provision is an ARP unit I think Ineed. ds1 and ds2 had some one-to-one when they were on school action plus but done on an adhoc basis and more in the form of a security guard rather than a learning aid in the main. Although they did each do 30 minutes on anger management/social skills with her for a while. I guess it depends whether the school has any spare capacity in its TA budget as to whether it can provide one-to-one. As far as I could gather ds1's and ds2's school had only one lady to cover all the children with special needs that were not statemented. ds2 also finds Literacy anxiety making - particularly if he is asked to write about his feelings or to write from another persons viewpoint.

Thanks one I wondered if it might be to do with the ARP. At her schools there are loads of Sn Ta's and I think I might be able to convince them to put in 5 hrs per week for Literacy, maybe initially until xmas and see how it goes.

I agree that writing about feelings and for Dd3 inference is a massive problem but I also think that the new teacher uses too much fancy language which is confusing poor Dd3. I also think that she doesnt always say what she means and relies on the children to read between the lines. Which of course Dd3 cannot do.

I am formulating a plan! Smile

To be fair, the lovely Senco text me this morning to ask if Dd3 is ok. I cant really blame the school, Dd3 is just completely overwhelmed at the moment Sad

Ds is on enhanced action plus, he is in y5 since y4 he has had 27.5 hrs 121. 25 hrs are funded through LEA, 2.5 hrs by school.

Ineedmorepatience,

I think the SENCO is right here with regards to applying for a statement but I would make the app myself as you know its been done then. Also you can appeal in the event the LEA say no, school cannot.

I live in Essex and there was no one to one provided at all when my child was on SA plus. It was all small group work stuff. The only time he received one to one was via the statement which specified this in the document.

Statements are also issued to very able children; the only criteria for a statement is a need of one. Her needs are really not being met on SA plus fully now.

Thankyou TCMS I will ask the question at school on Monday.

Attila Yes I will put the application in myself, I would have done it sooner except that Dd3 has always masked her symptoms so well at school. The Senco and I discussed getting the EP in at the beginning of term which will probably go ahead but we are both concerened that She wont see anything when she observes Dd3 and that her report will actually be detrimental.

I have a lot of thinking to do Hmm
