Unhappy return for disabled couple
Tanya Moore and Paula Doneman

RUSSELL and Michelle Simonds came home from a wedding anniversary outing on Saturday knowing somebody had defaced their home with the sprayed word "retards".
But arguably worse was to come.
When the couple ? who suffer from cerebral palsy ? arrived at their Petrie unit, just north of Brisbane, they found their wedding, engagement and eternity rings, jewellery, TV set, DVD player and many other possessions had been stolen.
Yesterday Mrs Simonds said she and her husband cried and cried ? asking why it had happened to them.
"What have we done to deserve this punishment?" she asked. "It's sick."
She said the graffiti was the hardest thing to comprehend.
"We're no different from anybody else," she said.
"You try to lead a normal life and you don't believe your disability affects you."
Yet yesterday, the couple's foremost concern was for others.
Mrs Simonds said they had told their story to try to prevent recurrences of such crimes.
"Nobody else should have to go through this . . . I just wish that it would stop happening to other people."
Acting detective senior-sergeant Mick Pecic said the thief or thieves might have had local knowledge, because they appeared to be aware their victims were disabled.
"It was a callous attack against vulnerable people with disabilities," he said.
The graffiti is believed to be linked to last week's robbery.
The vandal sprayed the tag "SW" in rows over the outside of the unit. Sgt Pecic urged anyone who might know something about this tag or the robbery to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
