Hi, my ds 12, severe dcd , currently being assessed for asd has a writing age of 5-6 years. After much talking with senco and English teacher last year he was allowed a laptop for English.
OT called me in August at the end of year 7 to say that she had observed him in school and has told them he needs laptop for all classes where possible and that this would be put in place for this september.

However , my son still has the laptop for only English lessons since returning to school and I am wondering if they just do not want to do this, hence me asking , can I insist, I can't understand why they are not seemingly happy with the whole laptop thing.

School can basically do whatever they please, if its in a statement they are suppose to follow it.

However if they agreed to let your ds use it for English and are generally a helpful school, maybe its just a case of bad communication, has OT asked for it to be put in place in writing?

It's possible that the OT hasn't officially requested the laptop for all classes. Written reports often don't arrive until several weeks after the appointment, so it may be that the school doesn't yet know about this.

I would contact the school to see what they say.

He has no statement, OT has just recommended it, they are very helpful and understanding when speaking to them , but not always good at following through with what they say, problem is my ds can hardly write at all , but is quite competent and faster with a laptop, I cannot see the problem but I am wondering if there are reasons I don't know as to why maybe a school does not like to use them.

The OT came out to the school and discussed my sons needs with the senco in July, she phoned me after and said that the laptop had been agreed in all lessons and would be allowed in all future exams.

If they are generally helpful and have already agreed to it, then ask when they will be following the OT recommendation as agreed.
