Hi my son has just been prescribed equasym xl 10 mg. he's now 7 and starts juniors in the morn. I'm wary starting on them tomorrow as its his first day at new school etc. do I thing it would be best to try him with the tablets at the weekend so it gives the new teacher a chance to see my son unmediated first ??? Also could anyone else give me info on this tablet as I've been reading all sorts on the Internet and I'm now feeling very scared. Thanksyou

My DD started with Equasym XL 10mg and is now on 30mg.

It took about a week for her to get used to it initially and it has taken around a week each time the dose has risen for her to get used to the higher dose. During that initial week or so she has trouble getting to sleep and her appetite is very reduced. Once she is through that period she tolerates the medication very well.

We also decided to keep her on the medication at weekends and during the holidays as she became very distressed on the days she didn't have it.

We read about the side effects too and were very reluctant to try medicating DD. However, it has made such a difference to her life both in and outside school I wish we had been able to use it before now. She is transformed and her anxiety, which has been a real problem for all the family for the last year, has just gone. We are all happier as a consequence and she is making rapid progress academically also.

It is up to you of course what you decide to do re starting the medication but I would say that the first week back to school is always very tiring for any child let alone one who has not had a full night's sleep all week. It may be better to start it in a week or so when they have gotten over the initial shock of going into a new school.

Hope this helps

I would agree that waiting til the weekend is a good idea.

Equasym did not agree with my ds, in that he was very low in it, tried 10mg and 20mg, went back to short acting Ritalin as this works really well for him without the side effects.

I was warned that some of the side effects take up to 3 days to settle.

The short acting Ritalin makes a big difference in my ds concentration and ability at school. We are fortunate with no horrible side effects on sleep or appetite at all.
