hi,

Has anyone ever managed to find a tutor or center in London that specialises in helping children with this difficulty?

I have come across some centres/tutors that can help improve maths but not actually trained/a specialist in this area like one can get if a child had dyslexia.

DS recently has some standard tutoring with Maths and it is form this I see why he needs a specialist rather than a tutor. She said that he did not know his times table and he just needed to practice, well for anyone with this difficulty, it doesn't quite work like that, they actually have a hard time visualisung and understanding it, she also said she found it strange that they would do an operation together, she would help him, he could then do it alone, and then 30 mins later he would forget, once she prompted him, he would be able to do it, then go back to it after 10 mins he would forget, again I am assuming it is down to his difficulties with numbers, it could also have to do with his poor memory??

On a side note, any one have Dr Richard Soppit contact details, the number I have is no longer in use :-(

Thanks Folks

Highly highly recommend Dyslexia and Literacy Support Centre in Suffolk. As well as conventional teaching, they also do skype sessions for older children (if you can't get there). They do maths too.

They are the only ones who didn't give up on my DS and I can't recommend them highly enough.

oops - just re-read that and it doesn't make sense. I meant to say "they do conventional (ie face-to-face) teaching, and also skype sessions". The skype sessions only work if your DS doesn't have issues with attention. All teachers are dyslexia specialists with many years experience and can cover both literacy and/or numeracy.

I tutor pupils with dyscalculia and dyslexia at my home in N. London (Herts.). I'm PATOSS registered - SpLD Dip., APC dyslexia assessor. If I'm not nearby, you might like to contact PATOSS: 01386 712716 who hold lists of well qualified tutors (and assessors) around the country.

Unicorn Maths in Putney.

My kid was on their waiting list. At the time they charged £50 an hour.

I would highly highly recommend Numicon which I have seen transform the lives of many children who have difficulties with maths.
Fantastic product.
