I have just finished reading a book which mentions ABA being used at home and being very successful (a few of you will probably know which book I have been reading Grin). I would like to do this with my Ds 8 who has Asperger's can anyone give me some pointers of where to start?. I understand that tokens can be used and deducted then at the end of the day?? they are added up and a reward is chosen by Dc dependent on total tokens.

We have always used a reward system at home but not in the sense of anything written down or anything collected so isn't always effective and we still get the same re-occuring problems.

When introducing a token system it really depends on the child but the rewards should be easy to get and fast.

I've never done it with an 8yr old so don't have any experience, but usually you don't start with tokens, you start with reward, and the reward has to be something the child is really motivated by.

So, my 6yr old likes to draw pictures. I can remove all of the pens and say.

So, ds' do this - hurrah. He's a red pen.

DS 'I want green'.

Me: 'okay, - do this' - 'hurrah, - here's a green pen.

DS 'I want orange' ' me: 'okay, you need two tokens. Do this - here's a token, - do this - here's a token', 'when you're ready, give me the tokens and I'll give you orange'. 'Hurrah - here's orange'

etc etc.

I would recommend a book by Robert Schramm called Motivation and Reinforcement.
I also wouldn't deduct any tokens/rewards that have already been earned as positive reinforcement works much better than negative.
You may want to look into getting a professional board certified behavioural analyst (BCBA) to help you.
Depending on your financial circumstances you may qualify from a grant from the Caudwell charity.
