What DX does your child with delayed/ disordered speech have?

BAckground: DS1 has HFA, with APD as part of that. Older DD is NT. I am certain that DS2 (4) is NT.

He has a big speech delay. Today we were told for sure that it is not deafness. I am actually upset about that - I wanted an answer that wasn't processing disorder. I am convinced the child is not spectrum, he has wonderful imaginative play, has masses of empathy and is excellent at reading situations. But this speech thing. And he Will Not Speak to strangers, which made the SALT assessment rather tricksy.

So, I'm wondering what other reasons there are for speech disorder/ delay? Any experience or stories gratefully received!

DS who is nearly 5 has a diagnosis of Pragmatic language disorder, receptive and expressive speech delay.

He didnt use words until 3 and even though his speech is crystal clear a lot of it doesnt make sense. He has a habit of sticking random words into short sentences, his favourite one being 'very' He also forgets words and takes everything very literally which can be very funny at times!

He has mild developmental delays aswell so fortunately he is unaware when he gets things wrong but we have noticed children his age becoming more aware and getting frustrated with him so i'm sure at some point we will have problems with his interactions He bounces a lot to compensate and acts the fool for laughs with his peers.

DS has been really non compliant with every assessment because he has the attention span of a flea but thankfully the S&lt got there in the end to get a better picture of his language.

DS is lovely but does get very confused in new situations which i am sure is down to language and not ASD. He is still reviewed by ASD specialist but i think they are starting to agree with me that its his language that causes his behaviours and not the other way around.

DS2 has a very high pitched voice, didn't speak at all until after two and now at 4 is still stopping, fronting, missing loads of sounds. And saying "Wha?" an awful lot.

I just haveno clue what is going on. With DS1, I knew it was ASD from very, very early childhood, he had an initial DX by 2 and full DX at 4.

I have a ds 6 who was a totally quiet baby until about 3. At 4 he saw NHS SALT who diagnosed a phonological processing delay/disorder. His main problem was missing the ends off words (final consonant deletion) which is more or less corrected now although he still has difficulties with cluttering/sound production and can still be hard to understand at times.

He's also been recently diagnosed with social anxiety/selective mutism and the psychologist believes that his speech disorder probably triggered it. They assessed for ASD as he has traits but not enough for a diagnosis and the issues he does have share some behaviours with asd.

I have a dd 14 with ASD and auditory processing difficulties (as well as other difficulties) however, like your son, my ds shows lots of social understanding, empathy etc and has already passed my dd in these areas. He also went through a phase of saying wha? As if he couldn't understand but it was intermittent. He's recently told me that he sometimes finds it hard to understand the teacher and he gets phonic sounds mixed up so I'm wondering if he also has auditory processing difficulties.

Dd aged six has severely disordered speech and language . She has recently had ASD diagnosis. She actually started to speak normally around ten months and then lost all of her words somewhere between thirteen and seventeen months.

Meant to say we had specific language impairment given as a verbal diagnosis before but not written down as one. Letters tended to say GDD or specific learning difficulties.

Dd (5) has severely delayed and disordered speech/language. she has a dx of autism. her speech and language difficulties are probably by far and large her biggest issue atm.

dd2 had a severe language delay aged 3 til 5yo. She is pretty quirky, rigid in her outlook, has subtle sensory issues and a hearing impairment. She is 8years old, imaginitive, empathic (emotionally) and an original thinker. She interprets language (and life) very literally. Still waiting for formal assessment for ASD which has been on and off the agenda for years.
