3 days of fully functioning, both ears hearing aids for ds(5) = language explosion! Amazing :-D

Turns out he hasn't been able to hear us for most of his 5 years....! Even if it is ASD too, things are most definitely going to be easier if he bloody communicate! Just needed to share, hope you don't mind.

Great news! dd2 has had a hearing aid before. It helped enormously.

When did you find out about the hearing loss? Did they give the dx with this knowledge (I only ask as dd2 is still under assessment for ?ASD and her hearing has just dipped again and she needs hearing aids again. I am wondering if this will go against a diagnosis is ASD.)

Undxed hearing loss can look a bit like ASD, it's true. But my godson is profoundly deaf, DXed at 6 months, and only DXed with dyspraxia (I think AS as well) at 13yo. So for him, the deafness disguised the social deficits.

I suspect there's more than the hearing loss going on and we've had the ASD diagnosis now... only time will tell, I guess. It was the language delay that made them not diagnose 6 months ago.

For today, I'm going to enjoy the fact he just told me there was no couscous in Pizza Hut. :-D

Hurray :) we've had the 'you realise even if she has a hearing loss that won't be the entire picture' prune face before now, but helping the hearing is obviously going to help the language/social behaviour :) then you can identify what isn't the hearing loss and work on that :)

We've had the opposite, M2M, more of a 'no wonder she has problems, she can't hear properly' style caring carrot, said with a dismissive wave alongside the sympathetic look.

Nevertheless, hearing aids maximise progress in all areas and just make life so much easier. It's lovely to hear and I agree a Friday toast is in order hurray and Cheers!

Can't deny that we've been secretly wishing and hoping the aids will fix it all... But erm, the occasional stimming, early echolalia, no pointing til 2 and issues around pretend play still now mean there are some other things which would mean I was firmly in denial if I really believed that. Rational self is now just hoping for a much more independent adult to what we might otherwise have seen. But who knows? It's a crazy rollercoaster...
