TINSLEY HOUSE SUPPORT THREAD - PART 3!!!! :)

Badvoc · 05/04/2013 08:55

Well, here is the shiny new thread for all of us either doing the TH programme, doing part of it, or thinking about doing it! :)
A brief synopsis of stage 1 of the programme can be found in the books "is that my child?" Or "the brain food plan" by robin pauc;

Stage 1 of the TH therapy consists of:

  1. Daily Multivitamins
  • Omega
  • Zinc & Magnesium
  1. Healthy eating
  • High protein, low sugar, no artificial sweeteners, additives etc.
  1. Specific neuro development exercises done 3 times a day
  • Takes about 4-5 mins

And that's it :)

Stage 2 involves computer programmes to sort out eye tracking and convergence which over 80% of children with reading/writing problems have.

We are coming to the end of our time doing TH I reckon...certainly by the end of the summer I think. It has been in many ways much easier than I thought at the beginning but of course takes commitment and time.

I am so glad we "took the plunge". It has made such a difference to ds and to our lives :)

Great news Ruggles. Well done your DS.

Badvoc, thanks for keeping us all going. I really hope the health of you and all your family improves soon.

We are plodding along. Doing the exercises everyday. Trying to push DD a bit. She has had a few falls when with her childminder the last couple of weeks. So that is a bit worrying as she seems so unsteady on her feet.

We must be off to see robin soon, although I don't know when exactly as I didn't write it down. I guess I'd best give him a call next week.

Badvoc · 20/06/2013 18:13

Tom made it home ok :) they then popped to the local shops :)
He has 2 full days at high school week after next
Ds2 enjoyed his morning in reception.
I won one of sets of tickets to go to chessington in the MN comp so we are off there next week....

DaftMaul · 20/06/2013 22:54

Great news all round Badvoc! Ds loves Chessington!

Ruggles · 21/06/2013 06:07

Badvoc - that is such a great surprise! I really hope you all have a fantastic time.

Lookslikerain · 21/06/2013 08:56

Hi everyone.

All going well here. I feel like we're starting to get somewhere on stairs. DS is starting to put only 1 foot on each step. It's not every time, and more going up than down, but I think it's coming. It is slow progress, isn't it? His language is getting really good. Sentences longer and more complex. He has started to tell DD what we're doing when we go out. It's cute; "DSister, we're going on the train!". Now if I could just get him to start talking to other people when they speak to him... I think his memory is improving too. At bedtime, I'll tell him our plans for the next day, and he now remembers the next morning. On the whole, very positive.

I bought some wipe clean books with dotted numbers, letters etc after my wobble about his pen control. He LOVES them! He understands what he's meant to do but we need to do some work on pen grip and control as he's very messy right now. Ruggles, Prince, I totally recommend them if you're looking for something to practice this kind of thing.

DH has Monday and Tuesday off next week so it's a long weekend for us. Lots of boring jobs to do but also going to the royal highland show in Edinburgh which should be fun (though a lot of rain forecast).

badvoc well done Tom on walking home! And I do hope you're all on the mend.

harriet thanks for the names. I will look them up, though in the last week, DS hasn't napped during the day and goes out like a light at bedtime!

1 week until our Skype and I'm counting down the days until our holiday at the end of July! Smile

inthesark · 21/06/2013 09:36

That's a lot of good news on here - well done everyone!

It's also good here, DD is really getting to grips with the stairs and can now do it without me/DH/soft toy holding on to her at all. But that's not the main thing; this week she got a present for, well basically growing up about a year and a half in two weeks. She looked after a 2 year old for 2 hours really well, got through a whole bottle of banana antibiotics without complaining (she hates bananas!) and had a trial day in a new school and threw herself into it without a qualm. (Whereas her current school have been assessing her for social problems). None of that sounds very exciting, but from here it's brilliant.

DaftMaul · 21/06/2013 10:40

This time in two weeks, ds will have finished Primary School - eek!

Still ups and downs here but the ups are winning and the downs are no where near as bad as a while ago!

LLR - that all sounds great. Language development is so key to everything else (with my slt hat on there!)

ITS - brilliant. Isn't it good to realise how far you have come? I think sometimes our dcs (and us probably) just continue to fulfil the role that is expected of us but by being in a new situation it is often easier to behave differently, iykwim. ds is seen as a quiet little mouse in class but take him out of that and he is completely different. I am hoping a new bunch of kids and a new class next year will encourage him to volunteer more info!

Do we need to start thinking of a date that would suit the majority of people for a summer meet up? Where did you all end up meeting at Easter? Should we aim for there again? Last two weeks of August are bad for me - unless we do a New Forest meet!! (I know that is a completely impractical suggestion!)

Lookslikerain · 21/06/2013 13:36

Daft are you a salt? I didn't realise that! I'll remember that for any language questions I have... Wink

We had appointments through for DS's nhs salt assessment. I'm a bit dubious about what will come of it. His language is really good with us/people he knows, he's come really far in a year but I put most of that down to doing more than words with a private salt. I had to really sell him in order to get through the triage appointment. I know they are so over-stretched and I think they'll discharge him as soon as they can. Even if they don't, they probably won't be running anything that would help him anyway. Like many parents, I had no idea just how stretched these services are until we needed them.

Badvoc · 21/06/2013 15:14

Was thinking mid August?

OP posts:
DaftMaul · 21/06/2013 18:08

I used to be a slt, I don't work anymore! It is worth going to an appointment if you can get one. If they try to discharge you, yo could request they review in 6 months because Lang skills are all so new and to want t check that progress has continued.

I go down south on 8th August.

Ruggles · 21/06/2013 19:41

Daft - had no idea you are a SLT - I will try not to bombard you with questions too! Smile So pleased that you have more ups than downs - I love all this good news!

Lookslikerain - so glad you are getting somewhere with the stairs. We've got similar progress with DD language and remembering things - I hadn't noticed until I read your post and she is remembering so much more! We've got a couple of the wipe clean books but I need to sit down with him. At the moment they are for self entertainment whilst we drink coffee! Have fun at the Highland Show - I used to go to that and really enjoyed it - even in the rain!

inthesark - I think your news sound very exciting and fantastic. I know what you mean, that to some people it might not sound like lots, but its those things we notice, that make such a difference to our lives. Especially the new school bit. I agree with Daft, a new situation can really help.

Evening Badvoc - how are you all?

I would love to meet up in August. How about 5/6/7th? Is Windsor a good idea or the Butterfly place you met at last time? Or here? We are 45 mins from J10 M25.

Lookslikerain · 21/06/2013 20:18

Thanks daft. I am going to go to the appointments, but I might ask them to be moved until he's started nursery as I'm more interested how his language skills work from him in that setting.

Unfortunately, I think we'll be away when you meet up again so probably a second no from me. We don't get back until mid-August.

badvoc I need to have a word about that flapjack recipe. It was bloody lovely and I have had way more flapjack than can ever be considered healthy this week! I didn't know what to do with the other have of the condensed milk so (to save myself simply attacking it with a spoon) I made a second batch last night for DH to take to work. One of his colleagues asked for the recipe so, hope you don't mind, but I have passed it on again! And a note to everyone else, if you haven't made them before, don't. They are way too good. Grin

Badvoc · 21/06/2013 20:31

Ahahahahaha.
Yes, I should have mentioned how addictive they are...

Hello everyone, I posted here a while ago to say we had booked an initial appointment with Robin, tomorrow is the day!

Can I ask does anyone do Tinsley house while concurrently pursuing NHS treatment? My DS was referred through his pre-school for a paed assessment, it was not long after that and without waiting for the paed appointment I decided to book TH. We finally got a letter in the post with a named paediatrician (who we have never seen) referring DS to a SALT. Pre-school thinks the LA is cash strapped and possibly cost cutting not offering DS a paed. appointment. Anyway, would it be worth seeing a SALT or would it just confuse things?

Badvoc · 22/06/2013 12:59

I would take any appt you are offered tbh, but you may well find in a few weeks you no longer feel you need it :)
Good luck

OP posts:
DaftMaul · 22/06/2013 16:14

Fapl, I can't see that anything a SLT would ask you to do or do with your dc would interfere with TH.

Good luck for tomorrow!

Ruggles · 22/06/2013 16:15

I would keep the appointment. DD has been doing TH since Jan and her speech has come on enormously - she's had grommets fitted and we also do some SALT exercises each day. I've noticed a real improvement in her desire to communicate since starting TH - it was almost instantaneous. She is now catching up with her friends which is just amazing. Good luck for tomorrow - hope it all goes really well. Let us know how you get on!

Badvoc · 22/06/2013 17:12

Btw...wrt left over condensed milk...I use the sneezy bottle that keeps in the fridge for 3 weeks so its not an issue for me now.
They are lovely though.
I will need to make more this week as I have been scoffing them.

OP posts:
Badvoc · 22/06/2013 17:12

Sneezy?
Squeezy!

OP posts:
Lookslikerain · 22/06/2013 19:57

Is it wrong that a squeezy bottle of condensed milk makes me think "open fridge, flip cap, squeeze into mouth and no need to dirty a spoon..."!

Badvoc · 23/06/2013 08:54

it is wrong.
But it feels so right....
Squirty cream is the same!

OP posts:
inthesark · 23/06/2013 09:15

You can freeze it too - Dan Lepard has lots of cake recipes that use condensed milk - in fact he has lots of cake recipes that use half a can, which is why I know..

Badvoc · 23/06/2013 11:51

Hi everyone.
I hope you are having better weather than us!?
Tom came home with a star writer certificate on Friday :)
Never thought I would write the following words, but we have no more room for certificates! :)
He is doing well with lumosity but seems to have plateaued.
He has 2 full days at his new school in his new class on 4/5th July!
He and his friend have already walked to school and home again so no doubt they will want to again this week.
It feels strange waving him off in the mornings....

Weeps.

Hello everyone, I've missed lots of chat in the past few days. Pleased to see everyone doing so well.
Re meet up I could poss do 5th or 6th.
Our news for this week is - ds had a fabulous time at sports day!!! This is nothing short of miraculous. Last year I phoned him in sick and we went to the museum instead. The year before had been an utterly miserable experience for us both so I couldn't bear it.
New school and one year of TH but he joined in all activities with a massive smile on his face. Participated in both his races and wasn't even vaguely upset when he didn't win, in fact was delighted to receive his 'I am a good sport' sticker. He loved the whole day.
I had been really apprehensive in the run up to the day, thinking it coudn't be possible that things could have changed enough for a day like that to be ok for him, but they really have :)
