TINSLEY HOUSE SUPPORT THREAD - PART 3!!!! :)

Badvoc · 05/04/2013 08:55

Well, here is the shiny new thread for all of us either doing the TH programme, doing part of it, or thinking about doing it! :)
A brief synopsis of stage 1 of the programme can be found in the books "is that my child?" Or "the brain food plan" by robin pauc;

Stage 1 of the TH therapy consists of:

  1. Daily Multivitamins
  • Omega
  • Zinc & Magnesium
  1. Healthy eating
  • High protein, low sugar, no artificial sweeteners, additives etc.
  1. Specific neuro development exercises done 3 times a day
  • Takes about 4-5 mins

And that's it :)

Stage 2 involves computer programmes to sort out eye tracking and convergence which over 80% of children with reading/writing problems have.

We are coming to the end of our time doing TH I reckon...certainly by the end of the summer I think. It has been in many ways much easier than I thought at the beginning but of course takes commitment and time.

I am so glad we "took the plunge". It has made such a difference to ds and to our lives :)

Beautifulpossum thank you. Ds had his first tablets on Sunday night and had no problem with them. At the moment I am giving half in the morning and half at tea time. Do you split them?

He came home from school yesterday saying "I did well today because of my new tablets", such belief. He had no work home to finish so perhaps it's psychological! He didn't want to go to school this morning though - claimed he was unwell.

I'm going to start the stairs at the weekend I think. His diet is not bad but I need to shop for a better variety of snacks. Being the youngest of three (by 9 years) he is used to just eating what is chucked in front of him.

It's great that your dd's ADD has gone.

fapl · 21/05/2013 19:13

Coming to join you all and mark my place:) I have made an appointment for my 3 year old (nearly 4) DS1 at Tinsley House.

He is starting school in September and I am really worried for him. He got in trouble in his gymnastics class again today for not sitting and listening, disturbing the other children and he hit one of them :(

I hope I am not rushing into visiting TH, I see a lot of you are doing a program of AIT first. DS1 definitely has trouble listening. I just feel time is not on our side before he starts school and I want to feel like I am doing something. Why are people choosing to do AIT first?

Badvoc · 21/05/2013 21:07

I think it was only me fap! :)

Beautifulpossum, thanks for the low down on what does what. It's good to know were are not on "dyslexia" exercises yet.....DD has been doing stairs for eight weeks......no sign of improvements. I hope we're doing it right because I don't understand how 5,7 and 9 will be harder than 3, should she not pause at all between repetitions? Should you come down with the last foot that went up, or swap? Am I overanalysing this?! How long did is it supposed to take to get better at this?

AIT - is that auditory processing stuff? DD definately has trouble with this, she often hears the breaks in the words in the wrong place and can't process anything that is said fast, which I understand is auditory dyslexia? Does TH tackle this side of things?

Shopping - gave dd2 (6 years) snipped open vegepa in her cereal (much harder to add to sausages, obviously, but as she's not actually doing TH....) this morning, she said she couldn't taste it. DD 3 years saying loudly that she doesn't want it, doesn't like it, but hoping she will want to be like big sister and have the same soon - DD3 really needs it, shows all same symptoms DD1 did at same age........ DH objected to signing her up to TH until we see it working for DD1, which I had to agree, does make sense....

itwillbebetter - thanks, glad to know I haven't been poisoning DD1 with adult tablets, we have mag 375mg too, just has added calcium and something as couldn't find mag only

shoppingbagsundereyes · 22/05/2013 06:23

Brightstars, I think the repetitions are there to increase the stretching of the brain ( that's how I look at brain exercises) so if you imagine weight lifting, it is harder to do twenty reps than to do five, but there's no point trying to do 20 reps until you can successfully do 5,10,15.
Fap- hi, good to see you

notapizzaeater · 22/05/2013 15:41

I've started the tablets now, food wise he has protein only for breakfast anyway (coeliac and doesn't like the gluten free cereals) so always has a few slices of ham.

Going to start the stairs/teeth exercises this weekend - could be fun as he is definatly in the PDA camp ....

How long do appointments come through ? Thinking could make a mini holiday of it in the summer hols ?

shoppingbagsundereyes · 22/05/2013 16:38

You can usually get an appointment within a couple of weeks. It's a beautiful part of the country, we had a couple of mini holidays for appointments. Can recommend the premier inn in Hordle, not too pricy and good location. We also had a wonderful evening at mudeford flats - took a book out to a super beach front restaurant. Kids loved it.

DaftMaul · 22/05/2013 16:44

You may be able to get an appointment for half term if you call asap.

We now have weekend appointments to tie in with family visits. He is bet flexible if he is around.

PrinceRogersNelson · 23/05/2013 19:33

Hi everyone,
Hope everyone is well.
half term here now which is going to be a welcome relief. We are all a little tired. We have a little camping trip planned for the end of the week. I am hoping that the weather picks up Hmm

It's the little things sometimes that make all the difference isn't it?

DD started swimming lessons about 2 months ago (this would have been unthinkable in itself last year). She is pretty good and can follow the instructions, but the instructor (who is fab) needs to hold on to her all the time to stop her going off.

Today I told her that when he is with the other kids she has to wait. And she did! He didn't have to hang on to her, he didn't have to retrieve her from the other side of the pool.

It was just so normal. She doesn't stand out as much and she can join in with things that other children can. Honestly I could have cried tears of joy for the normality of it.

Her life is getting so much easier for her now, so much more that she can do and join in with without needing support.

She is a bloody star.

shoppingbagsundereyes · 23/05/2013 19:55

And so are you...
Well done both of you :)

DaftMaul · 23/05/2013 21:48

Welcome fapl.

Prince that sounds wonderful progress. Well done to your dd!

Awaiting ds' return from a residential trip this week - yes, another one! Looking forward to a suitcase full of grubby clothes and an even grubbier child!

Received ds' class list for next year this morning. There are a few famous parents - feel very unworthy! I think he may be a bit disappointed that none of his close friends will be in the same class but hopefully he will make some new ones!

shoppingbagsundereyes · 24/05/2013 07:31

Ooh ooh, daft, give us some hints. Ds goes to school with Cilla Black's grandchildren ( c list claim to fame or what?) :)

Badvoc · 24/05/2013 08:09

Hi all.
Very quick update.
Tom doing fine, ready for half term! :)
Sadly I am not doing so well...was rushed to a and e early hours yesterday with AF (my heart rate went up to 270 at one point) and had to have some beta blockers and warfarin to get back to normal.
Was admitted to coronary care but discharged last night.
Feel weak as a kitten this morning!
Just hope it doesn't happen again! It was blue lights and sirens the works! Straight into resus, and 3 docs working on me at the same time...very scary :(
Anyway, I am home and recovering but might be spending most of the weekend in bed :)
So, welcome newbies :) well done mini prince :) and hope your ds isn't too grubby after his trip daft :)
X

oh blimey Badvoc that sounds awful - take it very easy this weekend. You poor thing - what is AF? Do they know why it happened (sorry if I just don't know your history here). How terrifying.
xx

Badvoc · 24/05/2013 08:41

Atrial fibrillation.
It's never happened before (and hope it doesn't again)
It was pretty scary tbh and I don't scare easily.

OP posts:
PrinceRogersNelson · 24/05/2013 08:48

Poor you, that sounds terrifying. Have a relaxed weekend if you can.

Daft - I have to ask, why do you have famous parents at school? Do you live in Hollywood!?

DaftMaul · 24/05/2013 09:24

Oh god Badvoc, that sounds so scary! Do they know why it happened? I hope you can put your feet up this weekend and re-charge your batteries. Will your Dh be around to wait on you?!

Lol at living in Hollywood! I was pathetically excited about it yesterday Grin but will completely out myself (because I have told a few people everyone) if I say who they are (pm me and I am happy to say offline!)

Dd has been sleeping in ds' room all week and is very disappointed to have to vacate tonight particularly as her room is so messy she can hardly get to her bed

Badvoc · 24/05/2013 10:59

No they don't.
May happen again, may not.
Off for a nap soon!

OP posts:
shoppingbagsundereyes · 24/05/2013 11:34

Badvoc, how scary! Hope you feel better soon
Daft have pm'd you ( because I'm a nosy mare)

DaftMaul · 24/05/2013 12:00

Badvoc · 24/05/2013 12:05

Sigh...now I want to know too!....

What a week!

Hello to everyone who is new - good luck with your appointments and starting the programme. This is the best place to get support and everyone was very helpful with all my questions... Smile

Badvoc - that sounds awful, you poor thing it must have been super scary. I am not surprised you feel as weak as a kitten. You MUST take plenty of rest over the weekend. Don't know anything about AF, but will you have some follow up? Has it happened before?

Prince - so great to read about your DDs progress. Happy camping, I'm afraid that the weather doesn't look too good.

Daft - another school trip! Plus famous parents. Am going to PM you..

DD had a review with her SALT last week who is delighted at her progress but 'concerned' that she is not making more progress and wants to refer us on to a developmental p'd. Felt low about that - I thought she was doing so well. Then yesterday we saw the ENT man who said that DD is cheating her way through all of the tests and he thinks its likely that she isn't hearing much in one ear... The longshot of all this drama is that she's going to have grommets fitted in 10 days time and her minor tongue tie sorted too. Dreading the op, but glad that something is happening.

DH and I are off to London for a romantic night away which I'm all excited about. Off to rummage in winter clothes cupboard..

DaftMaul · 24/05/2013 17:53

One grubby boy home. His wash bag hasn't even been opened but he says he did shower. He hasn't stopped talking about everything, has a husky voice - from dancing and singing so much at the disco last night, I think!

He said the food was fab - all pizza and chips type stuff ... Eek!

What did make me laugh was when he said 'at least they had protein for breakfast though'!

Ruggles, I'll pm you now (and Badvoc too!)

Badvoc · 24/05/2013 18:05

Wonderful :)
Ruggles...Blimey...what a week indeed!

Ruggles · 24/05/2013 18:38

Thanks!

Love the idea of an unopened washbag.... I think school camps sound like the equivalent of our teen discos Smile
