I'm just going to go for it - toilet training

My sons 4 asd I've posted on here about him with holding his stools before, I have not potty trained him because of this,but today im going for it! I'm hoping if we can even get wees on the potty or toilet then it's better than nothing. He won't sit on the toilet or potty but I'm hoping after a few days of staying in the house in pants we will see some attempts to sit on! Wish me luck!

Good luck. When I was training my DS just kept piddling on himself until I actually caught some of the wee in the potty while he was standing piddling on the floor. It was a lightbulb moment and he realised that's what we wanted him to do all along Even thought he'd watched us on the toilet etc he didn't realise that's what he was meant to do - he's a visual learner.. We only had a few accidents after that and didn't really have any issues with poo as he eats so much fruit (grapes and strawberries) he has quite soft stools.

Tricky one! There can be more involved then getting them to sit on the toilet etc. Children with ASD don't always recognise the physical signs they need the toilet because of sensory processing difficuties. My son was probably 5 or 6 before he was properly able to recognise the signs and get to the toilet in time reliably.

Based on my experience (and it is only my experience), I would say don't push too hard or get too stressed about it. It will fall into place. ASD is a developmental disorder and children often do things a little bit more slowly than their peers.

Oh thanks, yes I'm going to give it a good go but if he's really not getting it il have to knock it on the head. Going to give it a couple of weeks and if no joy at all il have to try again another time xx

Had a few wee accidents this morning, but I'm encouraged cos I have noticed they are quite timely, they seem to be pretty much an hour apart, and he seems to start moving around quite a lot for 5mins beforehand, which makes me think he knows its coming. No sitting the the potty yet, other than when I bribed him to sit on with his pants on by giving him a biscuit if he sat on. Have left his pants off now, he didn't want to pull them down so going to try and make it easier by having him walk around with nothing n his bottom half. Thanks for all your advice il keep posting on how we are getting on! Xx

Okay so we got poo in the potty! Once at 4pm, bribed him with 2 biscuits if he sat on and when he was eating them I was sure something was going on in the potty and sure enough he let out two little bits of poo! Then later my husband saw him with holding his poo and made him sit down, there was a bit screaming but a huge poo came out (tmi I know but the runs as he's on so much movicols) then ds came wi me to the bathroom to watch me put the poos down the toilet. For day 1 I think we have made good progress, just looking forward to catching a wee in the potty cos once he can let him self go to wee I think he will get over his with holding of poos.

Poltergoose thanks for the link we have a seat like that but he won't sit on it! I found a really good video IMO called toms toilet triumph it's Australian and the DVD is expensive but my son has watched it twice this morning on you tube with great fascination! The cartoon actually shows the poos and weeks come out its very graphic but good for our son cause he's a very visual learner x
