Please join new ABA Society

After the fabulous ABA conference yesterday, and the odd but lovely experience of meeting mumsnetters in RL (and seeing people's bemused faces when I told them "this is StarlightMcKenzie, this is Moondog, drowninginlaundry, dev9aug", can I encourage all ABAers to join the new ABA society, the UK Society for Behaviour Analysis?

It's only a £10 annual fee for parents, and we need as many people to join as possible, so that the Society becomes a powerful advocate voice on behalf of ABA. It also aims to monitor and increase professionalism in the field.

I see it a bit like air cover for us ABA mums (and Dads) fighting in the trenches to win ABA!

Also, when the website is fully up and running it will give us loads of good ABA research to use

Yes indeed. This will give you a voice in ABA provision in the uk as well as a one stop shop to exchange views, find professionals and so in. Very exciting. Sickof it was great to meet you T last as well as all the other lovely MNers who have created quite an impression!

It was so great to meet everyone and you especially , Moondog - your presentations showed what a beacon of light, efficiency and passion you are amidst the grey and dross of the SALT profession's attitude to autism.

Do you have to be following a proper formal ABA programme, or can you just be a DIYer?

As a DIYer (I dare not go further than advocating Linda Miller to my son's school as the LA already hates me). I'd be really interested as it would be really handy to be able to swap notes. There are lots of really great tips I picked up yesterday I'm really looking forward to passing onto some local Mums tomorrow.

It was really, really exciting to see OT's getting involved - my gut tells me there's a real breakthrough or two coming down the pipeline from that direction soon.

No of course not Boc. Anyone with an interest is more than welcome. I agree about the OT thing. The project that the student I introduced you to I introduced you to is involved in is very exciting and the OTs involved are very pleased because they recognise that applying behaviour inch principles means quite simply that their work will be measured and gains captured. More measurement means more recognition of good work which otherwise is not recognised .

I'm all for it being formally recognised as I'm still secretly rather miffed that a plane & banner has not been flown across London in recognition of my son's achievement this term of changing for swimming this term with no assistance.

(It took nine solid months of daily OT recc'd excercises for 20 mins most days).

sorry if it is a silly question but when you fill in your name etc and your statement and you press "sign up here" - the "sign up here" turns into a "wait" button - is that the end of the process for now - and someone gets back to me or does it mean that my pc isn't up to the job? I was kind of expecting to be asked to pay up after putting in my details...but maybe I need to be patient?

Also, can you sign the ABA-uk yahoo group petition currently underway? The new NICE consultation on autism has shockingly almost totally ignored ABA in favour of SALT. If you fancy a bank holiday laugh, just look at the membership of NICE's panel - no wonder SALT came out tops, turkeys don't vote for Christmas!

NHS Evidence has tonnes of good stuff to say about ABA.
I collected all the refs. a couple of years ago. I'd be glad to share with anyone.

Here it is - a very long doc, but it is the concluding recommendations on particularly speech and challenging behaviours that I found most waffly and just preserving the status quo.

Would be very interested in your views and also those references you have collected - do you still have my email?

Disappointing of NICE, as they are supposed to be all about the evidence.

I guess this is SALT's answer to the cochrane review, - a way for them to keep their jobs by getting NICE to say they should.

I can't see NICE endorsing ABA. How could they risk being expected to fund it?

Agree Star, any petition will be a bit of a David and Goliath scenario, but you never know and - in one of my fave quotes from that deep and meaningful show Sex and the City : "it's a contribution"
