DLA - worth applying for before dx?

My DS is most likely going to be diagnosed with ASD, but it's going to be at least another few months until he is diagnosed. Do you think it's worth trying to apply for DLA before we get the diagnosis? Are they likely to reject my application without one? I just don' want to apply and then find that I've wasted a lot of time.

I got DLA for ds and he didn't get a dx until almost a year later. He did have a statement though so that probably helped. I applied not expecting to get it really. They did call to ask if he was going to be getting a dx in the future though.

DLA is based on needs rather than dx. I would advice you apply and if you are in process in dx supply them with some docs.

I'm just about to send my form back, and DS3's ADOS isn't till May.

I applied before diagnosis I did have some reports to send off though but I still got higher rate I would definitely send off.

I applied before diagnosis too, sent any reports I had and was fortunate that DS was awarded fairly quickly. I had applied for his statement but that wasn't through when he was awarded. Good luck.

Hi I was awarded it six months before diagnosis, got middle rate and carers too. It was an absolute life saver for me as my DS was part time at school and I couldn't get back to work. It was awarded til he was six pending outcomes and just done the renewal form.

DD1's been getting HRC then HRC/HRM for over 4 years - she still hasn't got a diagnosis Grin It's needs, not diagnosis.

Thank you for your replies - they've been really helpful. I shall get on with it and apply! Mind you, looking at the form, DS might have the dx by the time I finish filling it in!
