LOOKING FOR SCHOOL

I have a girlfriend who is moving over to London from the US, and is looking for a school for her 13 year old son who has dyslexia as well as ADD. She wants to go the independent route, and is looking for a special school--doesn't want to try mainstream. Any suggestions out there?

Try Centre Academy ; it does the US high school diploma and has a good record

My daughter is in Year 11 at The Moat School in Fulham. She has severe dyslexia, ADD and anxiety. We are really happy with the school .. i will try to give more info tomorrow when I have time.

The Moat is a secondary school specialising in dyslexia but not all the children are dyslexic. Some have mild aspergers, dyspraxia, ADD/ADHD and other language difficulties. In many ways it is like a mainstream school. It is a very long day from 8.30 - 3.45 with short breaks but then the kids don't get much homework until Years 10 and 11 and even then not a lot. It is quite strict and I think the kids appreciate the clear rules.

The teaching is great with max 8 in a class. GCSE classes are even smaller .. only 2 in her music class

I cannot thank the Moat enough when I think how my daughter has progressed since year 7. She suffers periodically from severe anxiety and I cannot imagine many schools would have supported us in the way the Moat have.

She is now a confident (most of the time) girl and her predicted GCSE results are so much better than we could ever have hoped for.The Moat doesn't have a Sixth Form so she is going to a mainstream college. It is scary for her to leave the Moat but she is ready. The Moat really is a unique place.

Thanks Journeygirl.

Funny that you mention the Moat because that is the school that my friend's Ed Psych in New York also mentioned. She apparently had visited it last year and thought it was wonderful. Many thanks!
